QUALITY K9 TRAINING MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

Burnett County Sheriff's office, and many K9's in our area are trained by PERFORMANCE KENNELS!

PATROL DOGS: Their dogs have been tested in the areas of apprehension work, scent work, ball drive, search drive, environmental stability and sociability. Such tests are not intended to replace basic handler and dog training, they are intended to select the best possible dogs for the handlers and your agency’s needs. The dogs are guaranteed to be psychologically and physically suitable for basic patrol dog and dual-purpose detector dog training.

The breeds that they specialize in for patrol dogs are the German Shepherd Dog and the German Shepherd / Malinois cross. In order to meet demand, our breeders are crossing the German Shepherd with the Malinois with marvelous results. This breeding combines the drive of the Malinois with the stability of the German Shepherd. Purebred Malinois are also available. However, they only sell a purebred Malinois as prospective patrol dogs to those who are experienced with the breed.

Performance Kennels specializes in DETECTOR DOG training. A large number of their single-purpose detector dogs are from the sporting or hunting groups such as Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Spaniels, or mix thereof. These "softer" looking dogs tend to blend in and are used by narcotics officers who deploy the dogs in plain clothes without giving the impression that they are “police dogs”. Imported German Shepherd Dogs, GSD/Mal cross, and purebred Malinois are also available for this purpose. Many of our imports who are trained for detection work are also trained in tracking and evidence search.

Their NARCOTIC DETECTOR DOGS are pre-trained to the passive alert on ma*****na, hash, co***ne, crack, ice (m**h), tar he**in, brown powder he**in, mushrooms, ecstasy and molly. Upon request, they will delete ma*****na and hash from the list of imprinted substances. After the dogs are pre-trained they spend two weeks teaching the new handlers how to work their dogs.

Their EXPLOSIVE DETECTOR DOGS are imprinted on Military block TNT, granular TNT, C-3, C-4, HMX, detasheet, semtex, cast boosters, comp B, det cord (RDX and PETN), black powder, time fuse, safety fuse, fireworks, pyrodex, potassium chlorate, sodium chlorate, flash powder, smokeless powder (single and double base), ammonium nitrate, prills, ammonium based emulsions and water gel. Additional substances can be added. All explosive dogs are trained to the ORT (odor recognition test).

Performance Kennels has vast experience training WILDLIFE DETECTOR DOGS for Game Warden K-9 programs. They have trained dogs to detect fish, venison, zebra mussels, spent shotgun shells and brass and guns. Sporting breeds are the most commonly used dogs for this type of mission

K9'S POSITIVE IMPACT IN OUR COMMUNITIES ARE IMMEASURABLE!

The St. Croix Falls Police Department’s K9 program continues to be a critical asset in
protecting our community and enhancing public safety. Police K9 teams provide
specialized capabilities that go far beyond traditional policing, allowing officers to
respond more effectively to a wide range of situations.
Our K9 program has played a key role in identifying illegal drugs that threaten the safety
and well-being of our residents. A recent incident in January highlights the value of this
program. During an early morning traffic stop on U.S. Highway 8 for suspected impaired
driving, K9 Ikar was deployed and alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.
That alert led to a search which uncovered m**hamphetamine, co***ne, prescription
pills, and drug paraphernalia.
The investigation continued at a local motel where additional narcotics and
paraphernalia were located. In total, officers recovered over 22 grams of
m**hamphetamine, nearly 18 grams of co***ne, and multiple items associated with drug
use and distribution. This case demonstrates how a trained K9 team can quickly and
effectively identify criminal activity, often uncovering evidence that might otherwise go
undetected.
In February, K9 Ikar officially retired after faithfully serving the St. Croix Falls community.
His contributions to our department and the safety of our residents were significant, and
we are grateful for his years of dedicated service alongside his handler.
While K9 Ikar’s retirement marks the end of an important chapter, it does not mark the
end of our K9 program. The St. Croix Falls Police Department fully intends to bring
another K9 into service as soon as possible. We recognize the tremendous value that a
K9 team provides—not only in narcotics detection, but also in tracking, suspect
apprehension, and locating missing persons.
The presence of a K9 also serves as a strong deterrent to criminal activity. Individuals
are less likely to engage in illegal behavior when they know a highly trained police dog
may be involved. In many cases, the deployment of a K9 can lead to quicker
compliance and safer resolutions.
Equally important is the role our K9 program plays in community engagement. Our K9
teams regularly participate in demonstrations, school visits, and community events.
These interactions help build trust, educate the public, and create positive connections
between law enforcement and the community we serve.
Maintaining a K9 program requires ongoing training, care, and investment. However, the
return on that investment is clear. The program enhances officer safety, improves
investigative outcomes, and strengthens community relationships.

The St. Croix Falls Police Department remains committed to proactive policing and to
using every available resource to keep our community safe. Our K9 program is a proud
example of that commitment, and we look forward to continuing its legacy in the near
future.
