Mt. Taylor Quadrathlon

Mt. Taylor Quadrathlon A 43-mile race that takes you up and down Mt. Taylor, President's Day Weekend. The Quad involves cycling, running, skiing and snowshoeing.

Bike: Racers begin at an elevation of 6,500 ft. with a 13 mile road race through the streets of Grants and then begin the 1,700 foot climb from desert cactus to ponderosa pine. Run: At the end of the paved road, bikes are parked and racers must run the next five miles on gravel roads. The road generally starts out dry but usually turns to snow pack. This part of the course will climb 1,250 feet

in elevation. Cross County Ski: Runners then turn to cross-country skis to challenge the next 1,200 foot climb of the mountaineering ski course that covers two miles. During the final yards of this course you must face the notorious "Heart Break Hill" that lies waiting for weary racers. Snowshoe: The remaining one mile climb on snowshoes gains 600 feet to reach the 11,301 foot summit of Mt. Taylor where a person can see for over one hundred miles on a clear day. and then...
The race is only half over. You must reverse the four events and race the 21 miles back to the Start/Finish line. Watch our 2 part video in the video section below for a more detailed description of the race.

❄️ 43rd Mt Taylor Winter Quadrathlon Recap ❄️

At the *literal* 11th hour, Mother Nature came through and delivered enough snow for us to green light the ski segment of the course. Racers got to experience a true winter wonderland as they ascended Mt Taylor on bike, foot, snowshoe, and ski (or splitboard).

We’re extremely grateful to our community for coming together every President’s Day weekend to bring this race to life — rain, snow, and/or shine. Thank you to everyone who came out this year. We can’t wait to see you all again in 2027!

❄️ UPDATE as of 7pm:

Bike - Wet pavement, no snow accumulation.

Run - Snow covered in its entirety. Light dusting at the bottom to 2” of accumulation toward the end.

Ski - Snow is accumulating quickly but there are still rocks exposed down low on the uphill course. We’re watching closely, but won’t be able to make a decision on skiing until very early AM.

Snowshoe - Cpversge is solid and conditions are good on the north side of the summit (traditional downhill snowhoe route). We will likely send racers up and down the north side of the summit rather than up the south facing treeline like normal.

If we have to pivot to not allowing skis on Segment 3 (traditional ski segment), we will allow racers to leave the run/ski transition wearing any shoes they want — but they must enter the ski/ snowshoe transition wearing snowshoes.
