As we close out the first day of the Josephine County Toys For Tots campaign, we want to take a moment to address a few important things.
This year we tried new processes, faced new challenges, and unfortunately encountered behavior that was disappointing and unexpected from some of those we are here to serve.
To be absolutely clear: every toy distributed through Toys For Tots is donated by our community. Volunteers do not personally select toys, set them aside, or control what comes through the doors. What is donated is what we are able to give.
It also needs to be said plainly that every adult volunteer working today had a child volunteer with them. The rumor that volunteers are “keeping the good stuff for their kids” is completely false. Our kids are here giving their time, working long hours, and helping bring Christmas to your children — not taking from it.
We will also be very clear about expectations going forward: hate, harassment, and disrespect toward volunteers will not be tolerated. This is a charity operation, and we absolutely reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who behaves inappropriately.
Toys For Tots is a charity run under a government organization, and there are rules we are required to follow. Volunteers are not being difficult, controlling, or trying to ruin anyone’s Christmas. We are simply adhering to the policies and standard operating procedures set forth by the United States Marine Corps.
We remain committed to serving this community with integrity, fairness, and compassion — and we ask for the same in return.
Thank you to those who showed patience, kindness, and gratitude today. That is what this program is truly about.
