Streams? Rivers?? Creeks....??? Oh my!

Did you know that according to the US Geological Survey, there are no technical differences between rivers, streams and creeks? What to call a flowing body of water is more about local tradition and perceived size than any actual scientific measurement. While terminology isn't consistent across communities with rivers/streams/creeks, the most important thing is understanding how watersheds work, with smaller streams combining to form larger ones...all connected!

The Yellow Breeches "Creek" includes the major tributaries of Mountain Creek, Old Town Run, Dogwood Run, Stony Run, Pippins Run and Cedar Run. Smaller streams often flow into these.

We're happy to have so many great named streams in the watershed! Naming helps people who live in the watershed connect with steams and the life systems they support. Without this community connection, unnamed streams can be more vulnerable to water quality impacts.
