Project Focus: Strip Canoe
Not wasting downtime due to Covid, Colin M. (our Colin, the younger) built a strip canoe. Using the woodshop and CNC router, he built a stand, created a shell, covered it with fiberglass, finished. The initial trip was over Mother's Day weekend and it survived.

FCW was recently donated a small injection molding machine. The Gluco VS25 is a vertical injector that appears to handle molds about 8x8 inches. Here are Brad and Oscar working to get it through the door and a picture of one set up. It will take a while to get the electrical connected, then we make molds... and parts.

Addition to museum
Here is the latest addition to our vintage computers and electronics museum. It is a ASR-35 teletype. These started production in the late 1960's and were intended for use with computers, unlike the ASR-33 which predated interactive computing. The 35 was a more rugged model. It used 7bit ASCII, upper case only, and operates at 110 baud. Accessories included a pin feed and paper tape reader/punch, neither of which this one has.
This one was just unpacked. It is supposedly NOS and appears to be in decent shape. It should be a good addition for the Altair and H8.

Parts is parts...
FCW has had numerous electronics and electrical parts donated. Most came from UTC, but some were from Dallas Makerspace, Hackerspace Charlotte, and others. Most are electronics parts including some Surface Mount Devices. There are 3 carousels and a wall of cabinets and tubs, and two stand alone cabinets. May the projects flow..

Classroom Improvements
Since classes are paused for the pandemic, we have been improving the facility. Additional outlets were installed on the south wall and this large monitor (yes monitor, not TV) was installed over the whiteboard at the front. This should help when classes resume.

Here is one of the workbenches that we got from UTC. It has a pull-out carrier for parts, an anti-static surface, adjustable height, and wheels. We added the upper shelf. This one is set up for general electronics assembly/troubleshooting/design. The white box at the bottom is a fume extractor.
