In memory of John L. “Larry” Thiery

Pioneer PBS extends our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of longtime supporter John L. “Larry” Thiery, who passed away January 6, 2026 at the age of 86.

Larry dedicated much of his life to learning, teaching and serving others. A longtime educator at Willmar State Junior College and Ridgewater College, he had a deep curiosity about the world around him and a passion for science and education that continued through his life.

He traveled widely, volunteered in his community, cared for the land he called home and found joy in sharing his love of nature and learning with his grandchildren. Even after his retirement, his commitment to helping others continued through organizations including St. Mary’s, Rice Hospital, the American Heart Association, blood donation efforts and Let’s Go Fishing.

Larry was also a long-time supporter of Pioneer PBS and the role public media plays in connecting, educating and telling the stories of the communities we serve.

We are grateful for the generosity of Larry and his wife Delphine “Del” and for the part they play in helping Pioneer PBS remain a resource for generations of learners, storytellers and neighbors across our region.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Del and Larry’s family and loved ones. His legacy of curiosity, service and giving will be remembered.
