Filling Bellies — One Meal, One Puppy, One Kind Conversation at a Time
Today’s outreach felt simple in the best possible way.
Hot bowls of spicy Mexican rice, corn, and vegan beef filled hungry stomachs while conversations unfolded in parking lots, motel walkways, and beside wagging tails.
One tiny seven-week-old puppy especially stayed on my heart today. So many puppies in the area have recently died from parvo, and the owner was already on his way to begin the vaccination series for his little pup. I gave him ARC’s number in case he needs support with future vaccinations, supplies, or puppy care along the way.
Another big beautiful dog simply needed food until payday arrives on Wednesday. The owner was deeply grateful for the bag of dog food and relieved to know her two companions would be fed.
But when we meet people out on the street and serve from our van, it is never just about handing out food.
It is about connection.
Building trust.
Learning people’s names.
Finding out what else someone might need besides a meal.
Giving people time to feel safe enough to talk.
Showing up consistently enough that trust slowly grows over time.
Sometimes people need food.
Sometimes they need dog food.
Sometimes they need help with a puppy.
Sometimes they simply need someone to treat them with dignity for a few moments during a hard season of life.
That’s what today felt like.
Not fixing entire lives.
Not solving everything.
Just meeting people exactly where they were.
Helping fill the bellies of people and their animals.
Offering kindness, conversation, practical support, and human connection.
These ordinary moments matter more than people realize.
