Old Six Mile Historical Society

Old Six Mile Historical Society "To preserve local history from the Old Six Mile settlement in 1801 by:
1. Promoting and maintaining a museum of local history.
2. "

Encouraging historical research in our area.
3. Preserving records and other items of historical interest. The Emmert-Zippel property, a typical farmstead, has a significant past and represents the historic heritage of our community. The farmhouse is being preserved as a museum and occupies the oldest structure in Granite City. The home was built in 1837 by William Emmert, a pioneer, horticulturis

t, and racehorse owner. The furnishings, which have been donated by pioneer and Victorian families, are from the same historic period and geographical area in which the Emmerts lived from 1837-1884. This museum shows how each room has been furnished with period pieces of antique furniture and displays smaller articles that are used in each room.

Community Turns Out for Old Six Mile Historical Society & Museum Appreciation Day

GraniteCityGossip.com, May 13, 2026

Thank You, Granite City! What an incredible day at the Old Six Mile Historical Society & Museum! Our Community Appreciation Day was a huge success, and we want to thank every single person who stopped by, volunteered, donated, or simply shared the beautiful and sunny day with us.

A special highlight of the event was dedicating our historic smokehouse to GCHS alumni and honorary board member Dr. Robert Doroghazi, whose generosity and support made such a difference for both the museum and this event. From now on, his name will be proudly displayed on the smokehouse in recognition of his contributions to preserving our local history.

The car show was a crowd favorite, drawing visitors all day long. We are excited to congratulate this year’s winners:

First Place: Bill Becker and his beautifully restored 1929 Hudson
Second Place: Jerry and Jamie Richardson with their 1955 Chevy Bel-Air 4‑Door
Third Place: Collin Davis and his 1968 AMX
Honorable Mention: Gary Grandidier and his 1968 Plymouth GTX

The museum tours stayed busy, the grounds were full of friendly faces, and we even welcomed several new members into the Historical Society. And of course, plenty of hot dogs, snow cones, popcorn, cotton candy, treats, and good company were enjoyed by all.

We are grateful for this community, for your enthusiasm, and for your continued support of the Old Six Mile Museum. Days like this remind us why preserving our history matters.

Thank you for making it a day to remember.
