Thirteen year old Ray Holes on Buck with his father, Bert Ray Holes on Lady. 1924 near Cottonwood, Idaho.

Ray's father was handy with leather and an excellent horseman--riding and driving. It would be another decade before Ray built his first saddle. He did have a tack repair shop at their farm and guidance from his father.

Bert made a "Dubbin" he used to keep saddles and harness conditioneded and waterproofed. In 1936, Bert's dubbin would evolve into Ray Holes Leather Care Products' "Saddle Butter."

My Dear Wife,

I spied a newspaper picture today from the revered scrapbook — a photograph of a nearby town called Keuterville, taken in the year 1912. Beneath it ran the bold headline: “Keuterville Is Too Tough to Die.”

The town lies just three miles from here, and the folks at the museum speak of it with admiration — one of those early settlements that rose, nearly fell, and then somehow survived with no small help from Taco Tuesdays.

It seems there’s grit in the soil around these parts — enough to keep both gourds and towns standing longer than anyone expects.

Yours with steadfast rind,
Walter

My Dear Penelope,

One of the curiosities the director here treasures are the old articles pasted into a recently discovered scrapbook kept by her grandfather, Al Uptmor. The pages are yellowed and brittle, yet the words still speak with the vigor of their age.

This article tells of two places burning to the ground. One was the home of Mrs. Lillian Hilbert, whose possessions were saved by quick-thinking neighbors who rushed to carry them out of the flames. The other fire consumed the store and attached home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Poxleitner. None of the Poxleitner household goods could be rescued, but a few items from the store were saved — among them, the day’s mail and several cases of beer.

I take great interest in these tales of fire, though I assure you my curiosity extends only to the reading of them and not being part of them. Such accounts remind me how swiftly fortunes may change, and how the true wealth of a place often lies in the hands willing to help when calamity comes.

I’m sure the sprouts are growing. Give them my love.

Your Gourdly Spouse,
Walter
