David was considered a man after God's heart. He's commonly known for defeating Goliath (see 1 Samuel 17) and even killing lions and bears (see 1 Samuel 17:34-37). He led a dominating military and ruled as king for decades.
We often associate people of success with having happiness and fulfillment, but we learn in the Psalms that David was lonely and felt like he was drowning throughout his life.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.
– Psalm 22: 1-2
Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish. Look on my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins.
– Psalm 25: 116-18
One very important lesson we can learn from David is that he did not hide his emotions from the Lord. When he was happy, he let the God know. And when he was falling into depression, he still came to God and praised Him.
Near the end of Psalm 22, David says this:
Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen. I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you. You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.
– Psalm 22: 21-24
David provides an incredible example of how to battle loneliness and depression, and that is by coming to the Lord in prayer and sharing exactly how he was feeling while also renewing his praise for the Lord.
If you feel like you are bearing the weight of the world in your current season of life, you are not alone.
Finding community is only one step away and we would love the opportunity to walk alongside you, just as Christ does for us. We want to offer an ear to listen to your burdens, offer prayer, and provide encouragement. We weren't meant to walk alone.
