At least 2 billion people worldwide regularly drink water contaminated with f***s. As always, however, it is rare for great things to be accomplished alone.

That's not okay.

20 Liters makes dirty water clean for the most vulnerable using long-lasting and innovative solutions. 20 Liters began as a conversation with local church leaders in Masaka, Rwanda. It was June of 2008, just after a cholera outbreak where over 500 people died due to contaminated water. So when we asked pastors from 6 denominations what the greatest needs were, the need for clean water was at the top of everyone’s list. From that moment on we set out to make clean water a reality for some of the most vulnerable members of the Masaka community. So we developed a partnership. Working closely with World Relief Rwanda, we were able to leverage their expertize at mobilizing local churches to bring change to empower local church members to make a difference in their communities through the installation of household water filters and rainwater harvesting systems.

Clementine and her family (husband + 5 children) have new hope for the future now that they have a slow sand filter from 20 Liters. Able to clean the dirtiest water, this filter lifts the burden of waterborne disease for the whole family. Now they've joined their entire community in bringing safe hygiene and sanitation practices into daily life. Small changes bring dramatic results, and we are so grateful to be a part of it.

Flourish Momentum - World Relief has helped 4 country offices become their own NGOs - self-led and self-sustaining. World Relief Rwanda has been the implementing partner for 20 Liters for almost 20 years. Now, they have commissioned Murika Development Partners to join us in our mission to make clean water, sanitation, and good hygiene a reality for all. What an accomplishment and a fabulous celebration of what these country leaders are doing!

Slow sand water filters are a simple yet powerful technology that has protected public health for over 200 years. Using natural biological processes, they remove harmful pathogens and improve water quality without complex chemicals or expensive equipment. Their reliability, low energy needs, and sustainability make them especially valuable for communities seeking safe and affordable drinking water. Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most enduring! (Volunteers preparing and installing 20 Liters' slow sand filters in Kinoni)
