NEW Design Guides for Senior Living communities!

SAGE is thrilled to release "Fostering Independence" and "Fostering Health and Wellness," design guides for the senior living industry. Written by expert focus groups of SAGE members--including architects, interior designers, owners, and operators--the guides support residents' independence, health, and holistic wellness by providing practical approaches for designing purposeful environments for seniors.

Access the guides here: https://commercial.tarkett.com/senior-living-flooring?utm_source=sage&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=seniorliving25&utm_content=sage_design_guide_2026

We are very grateful to Tarkett Official , a global flooring manufacturer, for partnering with SAGE on this effort and making these Design Guides possible. When like-minded senior living thought leaders work together, great things happen, and these Design Guides are evidence of that.

Focus group members include Jeffery Beegle, CHEC with Three Pillars Senior Living Communities, April Reinhardt with RDG Planning & Design, Isaac Wallace with ERDMAN, Lisa Warnock with Glow Interior Designs, LLC, Carol Elia with CR Design, Liz Mucciaccio, CSM with Immanuel, Amy Bursey with Monogram Design Consultants, Teresa Whittington with Teresa's House - Assisted Living & Memory Care, Dinah Martin Kmetz with Saint Therese, Nora Wiley with Luminaut, and Amy Cheever with Snow Kreilich Architects.

A HUGE thank you to Sandra Soraci, EDAC, LEED AP, NCIDQ, IIDA and Margaret Bartholomew with Tarkett and SAGE President Jill Schroeder.

The 2025 SAGE POE team included Amy Carpenter with design4age strategic advisors, Migette Kaup with Kansas State University, Lisa Warnock with Glow Interior Designs, LLC, Jeffery Beegle, CHEC with Three Pillars Senior Living Communities, and Grant Warner with BKV Group. The team was joined in Flandreau by lead architect Ryan Turner with DSGW Architecture.

A HUGE thank you to Tarkett for making the 2025 SAGE POE possible!

Since 1999, SAGE has conducted post-occupancy evaluations (POE) from coast to coast. The POE team spends a day looking at the host building or community

Join us for the upcoming virtual SAGE workshop, "Memory Support: Improving the Odds for Those Who Grapple with Memory Access," presented by Lorraine G. Hiatt, Ph.D. and Cecily (CC) Andrews. This workshop is AIA approved for 1.5 heath, safety and welfare learning units (LU|HSW). https://sagefederation.org/memory-workshop/

Traditionally, designers and sponsors of memory care settings use the built environment to attempt to mitigate risks, maximize wayfinding, and slough off excess energy. But few innovations actually support people with mild-moderate memory access issues so that they can address and adapt to their own early changes. We’ve yet to collaborate on filling the gaps with design initiatives, opening options for those with quirky or flawed memory skills. How can we shift from a memory care mindset to one of memory enhancement? Might we design to “prime” memory access and take advantage of research on attention span, the challenges of multitasking, and the values of sleep?
