GV Lions Club June news update:
We're moving to a new meeting place!
GV ISD is undergoing remodeling with exciting changes underway! We will announce our new, temporary location as soon as details are worked out.
Yesterday, Lion treasurer Janet Smith presented a check to Back-to-School Foundation rep, Darla Dudley in preparation for the upcoming GV ISD BTS Fair, scheduled for Saturday, August 8. Everyone in attendance jumped in to the photo with Lion secretary, Terri Collins snapping the pic! 😊
A check was also presented to the City of Grandview for the purchase of a flagpole at City Park.
Did you know? The GV BTS Fair has become a long tradition of our community's dedication to make sure every child has an opportunity to start their school year off on a positive note.
All families (Home-schoolers with a Grandview water bill as proof of residency) are eligible to attend and participate.
There are many benefits of attending this event:
*School age children receive a back pack filled with school supplies they need to start the year.
*Free lunch snacks during the event provided by area churches.
*Free vision screenings conducted by Grandview Lions Club.
*Free dental screenings by local dentists
*Free haircuts provided by local salons.
* Free fun! Every event shapes-up different, but look for our friend Aimee Pryor who's famous for making balloon art. Some years there's been face painting, a visit from the GV Volunteer Fire Department/Careflite where children can tour the fire truck & helicopter and more.
*Come learn about all of the extra-curricular activities available to enhance the child's educational experience. For example, Grandview Youth Association will have an information table, the 4-H Clubs, UIL information for specific interests such as band, sports boosters and the like, and the Greater Grandview Chamber of Commerce is usually there to meet, greet and welcome families.
Short story:
In response to being invited to the Fair, a young parent once commented,
"I won't be bringing my children to the BTS Fair. You see, we don't need free school supplies. We can afford to buy our own".
To let you know, this is not a charity event!
What is it then?
What makes this event so special?
#1, it gives local families and their children an opportunity to come together in the community to meet one another/network in a fun setting.
2. Who wants to take the time to decipher a lengthy school supply list for each child in the family, waiting in a checkout line in a store or even shopping your list online, when it's all ready to be picked-up at the BTS Fair?
The Back-to-School Foundation committee is comprised of reps from local businesses, churches, and individuals that like to "pay it forward" in our community. Volunteers on this committee change over time. Ask at your church or contact the GV ISD school office how to make a donation for this event if you appreciate what's happening here and want to help.
Last but not least, check out the photos for how to enroll a special needs child at the Texas Lions Camp at Kerrville, TX. GV ISD school counselors will soon have this information, too. Don't know about Lions Camp? Since 1947, Lions all over Texas and beyond work together and provide a free camp experience to any special needs child. Read all about it at www.LionsCamp.com.
It's a wonderful program! 🥰
