Grand Saline means “big salt” and the huge salt deposit located there is a factor in the settlement of the community. Use of the salt prairie found there predates Texas and was a source of salt for the Caddo Indians as early as 900 A.D. The original settlement established in 1845 was known a Jordan's Saline and was located about a mile southeast of the present town site on the Dallas-Shreveport Ro
