The best learning is a two-way street, and that’s exactly what happened at Tuesday’s safety meeting, led by Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration (MIOSHA)'s Pat Kochanny and hosted by Zachariah Tozer and Tyler Jones.

The group shared questions, stories, and experiences. That’s what this industry is all about, especially when it comes to safety. We can all learn from each other and prevent incidents that can change lives.

A few MIOSHA best practices from Pat:
* Know your reporting deadlines. Workplace injuries must be reported to MIOSHA within 24 hours of learning about them.
* Have at least one person certified in First Aid on the jobsite at all times. If you don’t, it can be considered a serious violation.
* Your MOD, TIR, and DART rates affect your workers’ compensation costs and bidding opportunities for years, so accurate record-keeping is critical.

We love when ASAM members come together to support each other in safety efforts. For us, not much matters more. Thanks to everyone who came out and contributed to the conversation!

Have you been somewhere new lately that changed your perspective and gave you fresh ideas?

That’s how several ASAM members felt after heading to SUBExcel 2026, American Subcontractors Association, Inc.’s national gathering for trade contractors.

Teams from Architectural Glass & Metals 2.0, Bouma Corporation, and Sobie Company connected with ASA chapters from across the country and dug into sessions on AI, job costing, contract risk, disaster preparedness, cash flow, and more.

“This was my first ASA National Convention, but not my last,” said ASAM President Dan Hall. “Meeting people from other chapters and discussing how they address the same issues that you are addressing is very enlightening and helpful.”

Sometimes the best ideas come from getting out and going somewhere new.

What a great turnout for yesterday’s ASAM event, “Building Smarter: The Executive’s Guide to Leading with AI”!

We had the privilege of learning from Mike Novakoski - President and CEO of EV Construction, on how leaders can move AI from a fun novelty to a powerful relational operating system that elevates every level of your company.

It’s Tony’s magnetic energy that you might first notice when you meet him. As president and CEO of Sobie Company and Architectural Glass & Metals 2.0, Tony Vermaas is a positive force (and friendly presence) in West Michigan construction.

Now, Tony has been named National President of the American Subcontractors Association, Inc..

It’s a role he’s particularly suited for, and we’re so glad he can represent all of us on a national scale. Tony has been involved with ASA for more than a decade, serving as Michigan’s board president from 2018 to 2019 and on the board of directors from 2016 to 2021.

Tony believes strongly in trade partners and the value they bring.

“Trade partners perform a large portion of the work on every project. It’s important that their voices are heard both locally and nationally,” he says.

While serving as President for the next year, he plans to:
• Advocate for fair and equitable contracts and payment
• Address workforce challenges
• Create more opportunities for trade contractors to connect, share ideas, and solve challenges together
• Represent trade contractors in Washington, D.C., on change order reform, immigration, and other federal policies affecting the industry

“West Michigan is a unique and tight-knit construction community,” Tony says, and he’s excited to bring that collaborative mindset to trade contractors across the country.
