Kicking DIS Ability Shontaze Jones, Founder of Kicking DIS Ability, and proud mom of E’Daniel “Kicks” Smith Jr. Our journey is rooted in love, lived experience

Together, we advocate for inclusion, empower caregivers, and connect families to meaningful community resources. Shontaze Jones – Founder & Executive Director
I am a U.S. Army veteran, community advocate, and dedicated mother to my son, E’Daniel “Kicks” Smith Jr. My journey has been shaped by leadership, service, and a deep passion for creating inclusive spaces for children with disabilities. Over

the years, I have completed extensive trainings in leadership, community engagement, and professional development, including:

Military Leadership Training – Junior ROTC Battalion Commander, U.S. Army Reserves, Active Duty Service (2004–2007)

Professional Certifications – Dale Carnegie courses, University of Missouri trainings, Microsoft Office Specialist certifications, IC3 Digital Literacy, CompTIA ITF+, Veterans Employability Training

Community Service Leadership – Chair of the Veterans Action Board, member of the Coalition to End Homelessness, disability advocacy roles

My professional skills are strengthened by my lived experience as a single mother raising a child with Autism and ADHD. I homeschool Kicks, manage his therapy schedule—which includes speech, occupational, physical, and food therapy—and work daily to create tools, resources, and safe spaces that help him thrive. E’Daniel “Kicks” Smith Jr. – Co-Founder & Inspiration
Kicks is the heart and soul behind Kicking DIS Ability. Diagnosed with Autism and ADHD, he has inspired programs that are creative, inclusive, and tailored to children’s needs. His energy, curiosity, and resilience remind us every day why our mission matters. Whether it’s through inclusive playdates, hands-on workshops, or the visual learning boards we create together, Kicks has a direct role in shaping what KDA offers. Our Mission Together
We believe in breaking barriers, building acceptance, and creating opportunities for every child to belong. Our lived experience—both as a caretaker and as the child inspiring the vision—guides every decision we make for Kicking DIS Ability.

Some of our favorite adventures are the simplest ones.

E'Daniel loves visiting familiar places like the library and museums. While he may choose the same places repeatedly, I do my best to accommodate what makes him feel comfortable, safe, and happy. Every visit is an opportunity to learn, grow, and create positive memories.

Today E’Daniel "Kicks" visited the orthopedic doctor to get molds made for his new custom leg and foot braces. What started with anxiety and fear quickly turned into smiles thanks to Miss Connie at Mary Free Bed Orthotics.

She patiently explained every step, reassured him he was safe, and helped him use deep breathing techniques to work through his fears. Watching him grow comfortable and begin enjoying the process was such a proud moment.

Thank you, Miss Connie, for your kindness and compassion!

Sometimes there’s no respite, no sitter, and no time to wait on our own medical needs. So autism moms and caregivers do what we always do, create comfort wherever we are. Snacks, favorite shows, headphones, and safe spaces… because our care matters too.

My son Kicks and I recently read Finding My Brother’s Voice by fellow autism mom Kameelah Marie, and we absolutely loved it!

This beautiful story follows a young brother Kylan (the detective 😉) trying to understand and connect with his older nonverbal autistic brother Kameron through patience, love, and communication.

My son Kicks is verbally autistic, he related to this book so much.

I truly recommend this book for all families... whether your child is autistic or not. It’s a wonderful reminder that every child communicates differently and deserves understanding and support.

Kameelah Marie this was such a easy & balanced read. Keep us posted on what comes next!

Hey parents and caregivers. If you applied for a Cubby Bed and were denied, don’t quit.

A “no” doesn’t mean never. You can reapply, and adding more information can make a real difference.

Include:
Photos or videos showing your child’s needs
Documentation from therapists
Notes from your child’s primary care provider or specialists
These details help show the full picture and can change the outcome.
Keep advocating. Try again. Your child deserves support.

Smiles, movement, and moments that mattered.

Kicks and I were grateful to attend the Bridge Walk for Autism with Hope Network and enjoy sensory night at the Public Museum.

We felt the joy, the support, and the belonging.

And it’s moments like this that continue to inspire the heart behind Kicking DIS Ability.

So thankful to be part of it. 💙

Supporting someone on the autism spectrum starts with understanding this: no two journeys are the same.
Just because you’ve met one person with autism doesn’t mean you understand another.

Autism is a spectrum, and every individual has their own needs, strengths, and challenges.
Listen more. Assume less.
Learn them, not just autism.

Support with patience, love, and flexibility... because what works for one may not work for another.
