🌱 Help Support the Future Stocking Community Hub 🌱

Kind Hearts Bloom is excited to be partnering with the West Grand Neighborhood Organization on the proposed Stocking Community Hub, a community-led vision for the historic Stocking Elementary School building.

As part of the project, Kind Hearts Bloom would help create and steward a community garden space that increases food access, provides educational opportunities, and brings neighbors together.

The project recently reached an important milestone: GRPS staff recommended WGNO's proposal as the preferred plan for the Stocking site. Now, community support is needed as the GRPS Board considers the proposal.

Here's how you can help before June 8:

✅ Attend the GRPS Board meetings on June 8 (details in the comments)
✅ Submit a letter of support to [email protected]
✅ Sign and share the community petition
✅ Submit public comments to [email protected]

The vision for the Stocking Community Hub includes community gardens, food access initiatives, childcare, workforce development, housing, and gathering spaces designed to serve neighbors for generations to come.

Every letter, meeting attendee, and signature helps demonstrate that our community believes in a community-centered future for Stocking.

Please help us spread the word!

Native trees are crucial in supporting early-emerging pollinators, including bees and butterflies, often providing the first nectar and pollen sources of the year. The foliage of native trees serve as a larval host for numerous butterfly and moth species (Serviceberries support over 100 species of insect!)

Here’s some of our favorite small to medium native trees to plant in residential yards:

-American Plum (Prunus americana)
-Serviceberry (Amelanchier sp.)
-Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)
-Flowering Dogwood (Cronus florida)
-P***y Willow (Salix discolor)
-Pagoda Dogwood (Cornus alternifloria)

Looking for ways to support pollinators this spring? Don’t clean up your garden!

Leaving leaves, stems and brush piles provides critical habitat for all sorts of pollinators and wildlife. If you find yourself needing to do some light clean up, wait until we’ve had five consecutive +50 degree days; this gives the majority of pollinators time to emerge.

Spring Clean Up Tips:
-Cutting stems to varying heights (8-24”) provides crucial nesting sites for many species of pollinators

-Avoid sending plant material to yard waste, instead opt for a brush pile that will host a plethora of wildlife year round

-Consider applying little to no mulch to established gardens allowing them to reseed and spread naturally

Do you use native plants to grow birds & butterflies?
Do you live in the West Grand or Walker area?
Would you like to inspire others to build habitat?

If yes to all the above, your yard may be an ideal candidate for a tour stop on this year's Native Plant Yard Tour!

Kind Hearts Bloom is partnering with Kent Conservation District on this single day, self-guided event we expect to hold on a Saturday in July or early August.

It will showcase up to 10 residential yards on the west side. Registrants tour the stops at their own pace and visit with the owners to get inspired and learn.
