Sometimes one difficult month can put someone’s housing at risk.

Dwelling Place’s BANK Fund pairs assistance with support from our Resident Services team, helping residents address past-due rent and work toward greater housing stability.

During the fund’s first 12 months:

• An estimated $180,000 in eviction-related costs was avoided.
• Residents who received support—and those who remained engaged even when assistance was not provided—stayed housed.

Popcorn in hand, mural in progress. 🍿🎨

Entertainment AlleyWay is taking shape on the walls of Celebration Cinema's Studio Park—an especially fitting home for this year’s Heartside Historic Mural, which celebrates the people, places, and performances that have shaped Grand Rapids’ entertainment history.

Artist Michi Farias has begun sketching figures and laying in the doodle grid, while Rhiannan Sibbald has been gridding the wall and helping prime the space for paint. Volunteers from ABC West Michigan joined Dwelling Place’s Mural Coordinators and Junior Mural Coordinators onsite to help prep, paint, and keep the project moving.

This week, construction wrapped on a new patio in the Elmdale garden—created through a partnership between Dwelling Place, Kendall College of Art and Design architectural students, volunteers, site staff, and residents.

The project began with conversations and ideas last fall. Residents and staff shared feedback on early designs, KCAD students secured support from partner organizations, and build days this summer brought the vision to life.

More than a patio, this is a place for neighbors to gather, spend time outside, and build connection. We’re grateful to the KCAD students for the care, creativity, and long hours they brought to this project, and to everyone who helped make it happen.

The work is not quite over: our Community Gardener, Jonathan, will continue working with residents to shape the surrounding landscaping and make the space their own.

Each serves different people and circumstances. Together, these approaches help make stable housing more attainable throughout our communities.

Sometimes the best stories are found in the everyday moments.

Our Director and Manager of CB+E recently helped refill a wheelbarrow tire at Elmdale Apartments during KCAD’s American Institute of Architecture Students Freedom by Design partnership project with Dwelling Place.

Students have been hard at work on the project for the past three weeks, and it’s nearing completion. Stay tuned to see the finished result!
