A maker space or hacker space is a location where people with common interests, often in computers, technology, science, digital or electronic art (but also in many other realms) can meet, socialize and collaborate. Maker spaces can be viewed as open community labs incorporating elements of machine shops, workshops and/or studios where hackers can come together to share resources and knowledge to
build and make things. A maker space is something different to everyone who uses it. Whether your interests are in electronics, knitting, machining, scrapbooking, woodworking, ceramics, crafts, sewing or anything else that involves creating something, there is something in a maker space for you. We are governed by our members, so the members decide what is in the space. At GR Makers you will find a vibrant, active community of local makers who are just as interested in creating things as you are. We currently have the ability to do woodworking, light metal work, 3d printing via a Makerbot Replicator 2 and the soon to be completed RepRap. We are proud of our members who specialize in the utilization of technologies like the Raspberry Pi in order to achieve the community’s goals and projects. We tend to specialize in whatever our members are doing at the time and incorporate it into our skillset. We are always looking for talented individuals who want to express their desire to make with unique abilities and talents. You are absolutely welcomed to learn and grow within our community. The GR Makers group meets for a social every Wednesday from 8 PM until whenever and also schedule special events throughout the course of the week depending on what projects we have going on. Directions are below. We want to give a special thanks to the Grand Rapids Linux Users Group for providing us with the inspiration and population to start such an amazing community effort.
