As the summer winds down and routines shift, we are thrilled to announce a new weekly support group for adoptive and kinship parents and caregivers of teenagers!

This virtual group will provide a space for parents and caregivers to make connections and build a network of support with others in a similar stage of life. Adoption-competent therapist Mari J. Itzkowitz, LCSW, will facilitate the group, bringing more than 20 years of experience working in loss, healing, trauma, and adoption.

The support group will begin on Monday, September 14 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. EST and will continue for six consecutive weeks through October 19. (Please note: Certificates of attendance will not be provided.)

What happens when you see the impact of your child’s trauma—but their teacher doesn’t?

Refusing work. Shutting down when corrected. Forgetting directions. Difficulty with transitions. What looks like defiance, distraction, or a lack of effort may actually be a child struggling to feel safe and regulated enough to learn.

This new CreatingaFamily.org article explores how to advocate for your child without turning the relationship with their teacher into a battle. The goal isn’t to prove trauma exists. It’s to help the school understand what your child needs to succeed.
