Today is a beautiful day.
Today is an important day.
Today is Juneteenth!

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Gen. Gordon Granger arrived with Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas, and announced to enslaved Africans Americans that the Civil War had ended and they were free — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

The holiday, which gets its named from the combination of June and Nineteenth, is also known as Emancipation Day, Juneteenth Independence Day and Black Independence Day.

As members of the global African community now resident in the US, we recognize that the freedoms we enjoy today come on the back of historic struggle over the centuries by formerly enslaved Americans and their descendants. We standing on your shoulders, and side by side with you not only in celebration today, but also in the continued push for equality.

We are excited and looking forward to seeing everybody tomorrow (Saturday, June 20!)

“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” —Nelson Mandela

As we celebrate the laughter, culture, and joy of Africa's children today, we remember the students of Soweto who marched on June 16, 1976, demanding the right to an education that honored their dignity and their future.
Their courage made history. These smiles remind us why it mattered. ❤️🌍💃🏾

Happy International Day of the African Child (June 16.)
