UPDATE: ADOPTED!
Hondo had a field trip this morning, and when it was time to come back . . . he had thoughts.
This normally easygoing, treat-loving guy was not leaving the backseat.
Asking didn’t work. Treats didn’t work. A little leash encouragement didn’t work. Hondo just dug his heels in a little more, leaned back, and then looked away from us.
Because if he can’t see us, surely we can’t see him, right?
We’re glad Hondo had such a good morning out. But it was also easy to understand what he was telling us in his very Hondo way: he is tired of the shelter. Tired of the noise. Tired of the busyness. Tired of having a good day out and then having to go back.
Hondo wants what every dog here wants: a home, a routine, people to love, and people who love him back.
What might not be obvious right away is that Hondo sometimes needs a little time to feel comfortable with someone. Please don’t let that make you miss him. If you visit Hondo — or really, any shelter dog — be patient. Give him a few minutes. Let him figure out that you’re kind and that you’re there for him.
Once Hondo knows you, that big happy smile shows up. And when he loves you, he really loves you.
Because he has been more stressed lately, one of our volunteers took him home this past weekend for a shelter break. With a slow introduction, Hondo had fun with her dog. They played, kept each other busy, and tired each other out.
And on today’s field trip to Aquinas, Hondo was especially interested in the younger kids at soccer camp. He slowed down near them and walked closer to the fence so he could watch.
So during the Summer of Second Chances adoption event, we’re asking for a second chance for Hondo.
A chance to relax.
A chance to get to know you.
A chance to go for rides, have good days, and not have to come back to the shelter at the end of them.
Please come meet Hondo at Kent County Animal Shelter. And please share him. This good boy is ready for his person.
