New Crime Survivors Speak episode has officially dropped! We were honored to sit down with Chaplain Clementina Chéry , who has worked for decades to transform how communities respond to homicide, grief, and violence.

After her 15-year-old son, Louis D. Brown, was killed in 1993, she founded the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute to ensure that families receive the care, information, and support they need in the immediate aftermath of violence and throughout the long journey that follows.

Today is National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. 🕯️

Every single day, we work with people who have lost loved ones to homicide. While every story is different, there are always some commonalities- what comes up again and again is a lack of support and dignity for surviving loved ones.

It's election season, and you know what? Crime survivors VOTE! 🗳️👇🏾

In our National Safety Gaps Report, we found that across all demographics, the vast majority of voters chose addressing the mental health crisis, violence prevention, and trauma recovery as their TOP public safety priorities.

In a country where 1 in 3 people are a victim of crime, survivor voices and survivor votes are critical to shaping a safer future for everyone! 🧡

Happy Labor Day! Today's a good day for us to re-up our Safe Leave policies. What exactly is Safe Leave? 🤔👇

It's legally protected time off work for victims of violent crime to take care of necessary things like addressing medical needs, caring for a loved one who's been victimized, attending court, and more.

We believe *every* survivor deserves Safe Leave, because survivors should never have to choose between keeping their job or recovering from violence.

Today is . But how do you ACTUALLY prevent crime? The answer might surprise you. 👇🏾

🤍 Expanding access to victims services and trauma recovery services directly interrupts cycles of violence
💲Investing in trusted community organizations gives more resources to orgs that are already doing the work, and doing it well
🏡Supporting families, jobs, housing, and education is overwhelmingly shown to reduce recidivism and prevent crime cycles
🔑Most importantly? LISTEN TO SURVIVORS!

Today is Day! We are fortunate to partner with so many incredible community-based organizations across the country who are doing vital, life-changing work. We truly could not do this without you.

CBOs have consistently decreased violence in their communities, reducing shootings by between 40 and 70%. These trusted organizations are often the first place victims turn for support, and for a good reason.

Tag a nonprofit in your community that's doing amazing work for public safety!

Pennsylvania's new 2026-27 state budget provides $4.5 million to stabilize the Victims Compensation Assistance Program - an incredible win for crime survivors throughout the state!

But there's still more to do.

Recovery for crime survivors of depends on whether they can access counseling and support services.

The last thing crime survivors should worry about in the aftermath of their victimization is losing their job as a result.

But for 1 in 3 survivors who take time off to heal, that's exactly what happens. Crime survivors already face enough barriers to healing... this shouldn't be one of them.
