THE THREE COYOTES GRUFF
A Sawtooth Fairy Tale
Once upon a time, deep in the wild woods of West Michigan, there stood an old wooden bridge.
Every day, the Coyotes crossed that bridge to reach the rocky climbs, tangled roots and twisty trails of Sawtooth.
But underneath the bridge lived a very grumpy troll from the distant eastern lands.
One morning, the smallest Coyote came rolling toward the bridge.
“Trip, trap. Trip, trap,” went the little tires across the wooden planks.
“WHO’S RIDING OVER MY BRIDGE?” shouted the troll.
“It is only I, the smallest Coyote,” came the reply.
“This trail is far too technical!” complained the troll. “There are roots! And rocks! And turns!”
“Please don’t worry,” said the smallest Coyote. “A bigger Coyote is coming soon. You should complain to them.”
So the troll waited.
Before long, the middle sized Coyote came rolling toward the bridge.
“TRIP, TRAP. TRIP, TRAP,” went the tires across the wooden planks.
“WHO’S RIDING OVER MY BRIDGE?” shouted the troll.
“It is I, the middle sized Coyote.”
“This trail is much too difficult!” cried the troll. “The climbs are steep! The lines are tricky! Someone should make Sawtooth easier!”
The middle sized Coyote thought for a moment.
“You should tell the biggest Coyote,” they said. “They know exactly what to do.”
So the troll waited again.
Soon, the biggest Coyote came riding through the forest.
“TRIP. TRAP. TRIP. TRAP.”
The entire bridge shook beneath the tires.
“WHO’S RIDING OVER MY BRIDGE?” demanded the troll.
“It is I, the biggest Coyote.”
“At last!” cried the troll. “You must do something about this trail! Sawtooth is too technical, and this bridge must be made easier!”
The biggest Coyote smiled.
“You’re right. This bridge is clearly the problem.”
Then the biggest Coyote called every Coyote in the forest.
They arrived carrying hammers, pry bars and saws, along with a few friends from West Michigan Mountain Biking Alliance (WMMBA).
Together, they tore the entire bridge down.
The troll stared up from the bottom of the ravine.
“But…how is anyone supposed to cross now?”
The biggest Coyote looked down and smiled.
“You said Sawtooth was too technical.”
And from that day forward, the troll never complained about Sawtooth again.
The end.
