HAPPY ST. HYACINTH DAY!
August 17th is the Feast Day of St. Hyacinth, the Patron Saint of Pierogi
The Polish exclamation Święty Jacku z pierogami! ("St. Hyacinth with his dumplings!") is an old-time saying, a call for help in some hopeless circumstance. It has derived from two legends. One of them is about his visit on July 13, 1238, to Kościelec. During his visit, a hailstorm broke out, destroying crops and leaving people with the prospect of famine. Hyacinth told them to pray. The next day, the crops were miraculously restored. The people then treated Hyacinth to pierogi made from those crops as a token of gratitude. The second legend mentions Hyacinth feeding people with pierogi during a famine caused by the Mongol invasion of 1241.

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED AT POLISH HERITAGE SOCIETY at their annual Polish harvest festival weekend of August 28–30 at Calder Plaza read more details below!

A message from our president:

As President of the Polish Heritage Society, I personally invite you to join us the weekend of August 28–30 at Calder Plaza as we celebrate Dożynki, our annual Polish harvest festival. This festival is a wonderful tradition that brings us together to share our culture, but celebrations like this only continue because people are willing to step forward and help.
We urgently need volunteers to ensure the success of our city’s longest-running ethnic festival. There are many ways to lend a hand, and as a thank-you for your time, volunteers receive food tokens to sample the delicious offerings from our vendors.

Event Dates: August 28–30

Location: Calder Plaza, Grand Rapids
