🌎✊🏿 Climate change is not just an environmental issue. It is a pocketbook, public health, and quality-of-life issue for Michigan families.

The numbers show what climate inaction is already costing our state:

πŸŒͺ️ 60 billion-dollar disasters: Michigan experienced 60 billion-dollar weather and climate disasters between 1980 and 2024.

πŸ’° $5.2 billion annually: Climate change is projected to cost Michigan an estimated $5.2 billion every year by 2100.

🏠🏿 Home insurance up nearly 36%: Michigan home insurance prices increased nearly 36% over a two-year period, with severe weather including thunderstorms, flooding, hail, and ice storms contributing to growing risks.

🫁🏿 1,100+ heat-related ER visits: Michigan averages more than 1,100 emergency department visits for heat-related illness each year.

⚑ Families are already making impossible choices: In 2024, 30% of Michigan households reported cutting back on food or medicine to afford energy bills, while 23% reported being unable to pay an energy bill at least once during the previous year.

🏫🏿 $2.3 billion for Michigan schools: Climate-driven warming was projected to require 1,135 Michigan schools to install air conditioning, affecting more than 553,000 students and creating an estimated $2.35 billion in installation costs.

And the impacts continue. Flooding, severe storms, wildfire smoke, extreme heat, crop losses, school disruptions, power outages, and rising household costs are increasingly affecting communities across Michigan.

For Black, low-income, and historically overburdened communities, these impacts can compound existing environmental and economic inequities.

We cannot afford climate inaction.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έβœ¨ "We The People."

That powerful theme came to life as members and Fellows from the NAACP Greater Grand Rapids Branch proudly represented our community at the 117th NAACP National Convention in Chicago.

From leadership development and advocacy to networking and learning alongside changemakers from across the nation, our delegation returned energized and equipped to continue advancing equity, justice, and opportunity throughout Greater Grand Rapids.

"We The People" is more than a theme. It is a reminder that meaningful change begins with engaged communities, courageous leadership, and collective action.

We are proud of every member and Fellow who represented our branch with excellence and demonstrated what leadership in action looks like. Together, we continue building a stronger future for all. βœŠπŸΎβ€οΈπŸ–€πŸ’š
