Throwback to our last swearing in ceremony!

After completing the CASA training course, volunteers are sworn in as an officer of the court by a judge. We're so excited to welcome our newest group of advocates at the start of training next week!

Last week, we gathered to celebrate our incredible CASA volunteers.

Each volunteer makes a positive impact in the lives of foster care children by showing up, listening, advocating, and ensuring their voices are heard. We greatly value their dedication and had a wonderful time celebrating them!

Let’s give new volunteer Margaret a warm welcome!👋

Margaret had been considering becoming a foster parent but realized it wouldn’t currently be a good fit for her. She knew that she still wanted to be involved, and a week later she saw CASA on the news! Margaret really appreciated learning about cultural competency during training. She’s hopeful to be able to make a difference, show a child consistency, and help advocate for their needs. Margaret’s favorite fictional character as a child was Harry Potter.

We had a blast connecting with our neighbors at Creston Night Out last week with our friends from Michigan CASA! Huge thanks to the Creston Neighborhood Association for hosting us at their awesome event. Our team loves any opportunity to spread the word about how to advocate for children in Kent County!

Please join us in welcoming new volunteer Sue!🤗

After retiring from elementary teaching, Sue was seeking a volunteer opportunity where she could use her skills to help children and families. In training, Sue learned that all families have a story and it’s best to stay objective while advocating. Sue’s faith motivates her to volunteer and she’s hopeful that she will be paired with a child who she can help and learn from. Her favorite fictional character from her childhood was Tinkerbell.

The back-to-school season can be an exciting and intimidating time for all students. For children in foster care, it can represent another layer of uncertainty in an already tumultuous period of their lives.

Many children in care transition to entirely new schools with unfamiliar teachers, friends, and learning styles. Adjusting to new environments while also experiencing trauma from abuse, neglect, and displacement from their families can lead to significant disruptions in learning and mental wellbeing.

All children deserve educational advocacy to ensure they are receiving the right types of support to stay on track academically and developmentally. CASA volunteers are trained specifically on how to advocate for academic needs. Volunteers monitor their CASA children's academic performance, communicate with their teachers, and advocate for things like Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

We’re excited to introduce you to Kurt, a new CASA volunteer!👋

Kurt decided to become a CASA volunteer to make a positive impact in a child’s life. During training, he learned that there is a great need for more CASA volunteers. Kurt feels hopeful that he can become a person that a child can rely on. His favorite fictional character as a child was Batman!
