After graduating from Wayland High School in 2007 Ryan Kaminski found himself in Uganda teaching at several different schools over the summer. That first semester at Grand Valley State University he couldn't stop thinking about Uganda! Several trips back and forth, the purchase of land, accumulating ministry partners, financial resources and construction of several buildings the doors to Rising Star were open to over 280 students in February 2012. Children continue to be on a waiting list to be able to attend the school. For just $30.00 a month one child is able to attend Rising Star, receive a Christ centered education and meals. You may also consider a one time donation towards the next building project of additional classroom space. As resources come in and ministry partners commit the school is able to admit more students. A pencil, a notebook, and a whole continent coming into focus. ✏️🌍

Look closely and you’ll see it: a hand-drawn map of Africa, lists of countries, notes on latitude and longitude. This student isn’t just copying words — they’re learning to place themselves in the world, to understand the very ground they stand on.

There’s something moving about a child mapping their own continent for the first time. Every line on that page is a mind expanding.

Rice and beans, eaten shoulder to shoulder against a sunny wall — it looks like the simplest thing in the world. But for many of these boys, this is the most dependable meal of their day, and it’s the reason they can focus through an afternoon of lessons instead of an aching stomach.

An empty room is never really empty. It’s a promise waiting to be kept. 🏫

Look at this hall — bare floors, a simple raised stage, light pouring through the windows, a couple of lonely benches. Right now it’s quiet. But picture it a year from now: filled with students at morning assembly, exams laid out across the floor, a Christmas program, a graduation, the whole school gathered under one roof. That’s what this space is for.

Getting a room like this built and ready is a milestone most people never see — the unglamorous, essential work of giving a growing school the room it needs to become what it’s meant to be. The days of the week, the months of the year, and a whole lot of learning ahead. 🗓️

Look at these faces — some focused, some shy, all of them right at the very start of their education. On the walls behind them: shapes, days, months, the simple building blocks of a child's first classroom. This is where it all begins.

There's something sacred about these early moments, when the world is still brand new and every lesson is a small adventure. We're grateful to walk the first steps with them.
