Celebrating our Donor Advisors on DAF Day!

More than 200 Donor Advised funds are held at the Community Foundation. Last year, 57% of the Community Foundation's grants were awarded from Donor Advised Funds.

Started in 2024, DAF Day is the national giving day for Donor Advised funds — the fastest-growing form of philanthropy in the country.

Continuing scholarship support is linked to higher rates of degree completion. That's why we introduced a fast-track renewal application for students who received a scholarship last year, making it easier to access continued support. By making college more affordable and scholarship applications more accessible, we're helping students focus on what matters most: their future. 🎓

Somos Comunidad Fund was established to support Latinx focused and driven initiatives. In October 2024, the fund accepted applications for funding from various community organizations. A total of $100,000 was awarded for programming across 11 organizations that serve Latinx communities. We are grateful for the generosity of our community and to celebrate this impact during Hispanic Philanthropy month.

The fund will accept grant applicants again in 2027 - stay tuned!

Alongside classes and coursework, many students face financial challenges and systemic barriers to higher education. In the latest issue of PARTNERS in community, we introduced you to Kennia Cifuentes and her educational journey, but she didn't navigate it alone. As a high school senior, Kennia was connected to Community Foundation scholarships by Principal Kenyatta Hill-Hall, who also serves on one of our nine scholarship selection committees. Thanks to community leaders like Principal Hill-Hall, students can access resources that help them pursue their educational goals. Read the full story at GRFoundation.org/Partners.

Happy 1️⃣0️⃣th work anniversary, Jenine! 🎊 As director of philanthropic services, she provides leadership and guidance to philanthropic services and is a key relationship manager for the Community Foundation’s donor advisors and fund partners. In partnership with other staff, Jenine also directs the activities of the Somos Comunidad, Black Legacy, Our LGBTQ and Youth funds.

❔What project are you most proud of?
Helping grow and evolve our Community Partnership Funds! This work reminds me that philanthropy isn't just about large gifts or names on buildings. It's about everyday people who care deeply about their community and take action to make it better. I'm incredibly grateful to have worked alongside so many passionate community leaders and colleagues in support of this effort.

❔What’s your go‑to way to recharge after a busy week?
Recharging after a busy week usually involves kicking back by a firepit, listening to good music, and laughing with friends.

Congratulations on 10 years, Jenine!

What does Somos Comunidad Fund mean to you? While “somos comunidad” translates to “we are community,” each donor, volunteer and grant partner brings their own purpose. Somos Comunidad Fund supports Latinx communities in our area through collective giving, community engagement and volunteer-led grantmaking. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month, West Michigan!
