Before hearing about SarahCare of Knapp's Corner, a Kent County family struggled to balance work schedules and everyday tasks with taking care of their loved one.

Since their loved one joined the Adult Day program, the family has experienced a tremendous sense of relief, gaining flexibility to run errands and attend their own appointments.

A safe, supportive, and engaging environment like that of an Adult Day program can improve quality of life through routine, socialization, nutrition, transportation, and compassionate care. Programs like SarahCare show how supportive services support caregivers and families, reaching far beyond one person.

This is your friendly reminder that our next Caregiver University session is Tuesday, October 20th, at 10:00 am via Zoom!

Titled "My Two Elaines: A Conversation on Caregiving", we'll hear from caregiving advocate and author Marty Schreiber about his experience as a caregiver for his late wife, Elaine, who was living with Alzheimer's disease. We'll learn how to provide compassionate care using different caregiving strategies.

Last week, all of our staff came together for our annual Employee Engagement Event!

We had the opportunity to pack gift baskets, write letters to older adults in our community, and share innovative ideas with one another. We enjoyed eating lunch and working together across departments.

It was a fun-filled day with great food, conversation, and teamwork. A big thank you to all of our staff for the work you do to support our West Michigan communities!

Today is Ageism Awareness Day! To raise awareness around ageism and work towards building a more age-inclusive community, we're breaking a few aging stereotypes.

1. Older adults work.
2. Older adults use technology and social media.
3. Older adults learn new things/skills.

Ageism is one of the most socially accepted forms of discrimination across the United States. Ageism occurs whenever someone thinks or acts based on stereotypes about someone's age. Ageism doesn't just happen to older adults; ageism can impact us at any age.

Today kicks off a new fiscal year, and with that comes new funding for services through Older Americans Act (OAA) and Kent County Senior Millage (KCSM) funding.

Together, these funding streams support a network of local organizations providing a wide variety of services across our nine-county region, supporting older adults, adults with disabilities, and their caregivers.

It's more than just one ride or one home-delivered meal. Each service helps an older adult remain safe, independent, and engaged in their community.
