From gospel, to R&B, to genre-bending blends across the diaspora, Grand Rapids’ influence can be heard far beyond the boundaries of our area code.

In celebration of 616 Day and Black Music Month, Free Alchemy Studio celebrates our homegrown artists with roots, connections, and legacies tied to Grand Rapids whose music helped shape the sound of Black music across generations.

Liberation Saturday started with a simple idea in 2022: create a liberated space where community could gather, celebrate, connect, and imagine together in radical joy.

Since then, an experiment in gathering has grown into a community tradition—bringing together Black and brown artists, DJs, makers, growers, organizers, healers, educators, small businesses, and neighbors for a day rooted in culture, creativity, and collective care presented by Free Alchemy Studio.

This year marks the fifth edition of Liberation Saturday and we’re excited to begin building what’s next.

Join us on Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 12-6pm at Garfield Park in Grand Rapids, for a day of community resources, music, art, local vendors, free produce and food, workshops, and experiences designed to bring us together.

This year’s event will feature:

🌻 Liberation Market with local makers, small businesses, food and more
🌻 Liberation Stage with live music, performances and DJs
🌻 Liberation Garden with local growers, workshops and demonstrations
🌻 Liberation Lounge with free community care and resources
