“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” —1 Peter 5:8

A two-minute drill is a game strategy of running a specific play or sets of plays, in the last two minutes of the game to score and win the game. The idea is to move the ball quickly and decisively, running specific plays that only work in the last two minutes of the game. This strategy is practiced over and over. Everyone knows their responsibility and role because it has been practiced repeatedly. This enables the team to execute the two-minute drill with precision.

It’s no wonder why the Bible tells us to do the very same kind of practicing and preparing so that we will have a clear strategy, a two-minute drill type response, when we are facing evil and temptation. When the temptations come or evil presents itself, we will know exactly what to do. Peter tells us to be sober-minded, to be watchful, to keep watch on yourself. These directions don’t happen normally nor naturally. You need to get ready, know the play to run, have the correct mindset and be alert. You need to be able to run the two-minute drill at any given moment.

You can only be alert, having a watchful eye, if you’ve prepared, practiced and embracing God’s way (His designed plays). Some of the best preparation comes from memorizing Scripture. Try a verse like Psalm 119:9-11, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping your word. I have sought you with all my heart; don’t let me wander from your commands. I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.” Another is Psalm 19:14, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.”

A second key strategy is prayer. By practicing daily prayer you are preparing yourself to be ready to pray when temptation comes. Each day pray and ask God for strength, courage, wisdom and peace. Honor Him and bless His name. In the moment of temptation, we are ready to run the play – we pray just like we practiced.

Get ready. Be prepared. The two-minute drill will be needed even today but with prayer and Scripture you will be ready.

“Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” – Matthew 6:5-6

Anyone who knows anything about the sport world would agree that the locker room is not opened to the public. It is a hallowed place that belongs specifically to the athletes on the team, the coaches and the athletic trainers. This place is hallowed because it’s where plays and strategies are spoken of, and team chats are given. It is a safe place for communication between the coaching staff and the players.

In our verses for today, Jesus gives the disciples (and us) a look into what locker room talks should look like with the Coach (God). It’s a private moment. The door is shut and we’re praying to the Father. It’s not about an outward display of our requests. It’s a quiet, private and humble conversation in the secret. A safe place where you can be real with the God who loves you. A place where you can be honest with the Coach about your shortcomings, your fears, your struggles, your understanding of the plan before you and your joys. It’s a place where you truly get to know the heart of God without all the extra noise and distractions of the crowd and others.

We might not have control over the places we live in, but God always provides a hallowed, secret place for us to spend uninterrupted time with Him. He is the Coach who wants to meet intentionally and personally with those on His team. May our prayer time with Him go deeper than just our public pre- and post-game prayers. May our hearts long for the secret place with Him. -Sarah Bostic

“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit- which is the word of God.” – Ephesians 6:17

Imagine it’s the beginning of a new season. The coach is standing before you, telling you what the competition is going to look like. You’re in a new bracket of teams, a level of competition above what you played last year. Things are looking new, scary and a good bit overwhelming. And then the coach has you stand in front of your equipment you’ve been using for the last four years. An unfamiliar season confronted with a familiar weapon is less overwhelming.

You’ve spent years learning how to use your weapon, if it’s a glove, you’ve worked it to fit your specific hand through daily use. If it’s a pair of cleats or shin guards, they feel like they’re a part of your body at this point as you’ve put them on every day to practice and play your sport. The time you spend with the equipment has a direct influence on how comfortable you feel in using it. The same goes for our relationship and familiarity with God’s Word.

The more familiar we are with God’s Word, the more comfortable we will be with the sword that has the very power to defend us against the toughest blows of the enemy. A scary and unfamiliar season up against powerful opposing teams can shake up even the most confident athlete if he or she isn’t spending time daily in practice. Likewise, the daily reading of God’s Word gives us what we need as we face the certain and the uncertain. It gives life and sustains our lives. It frees us from the enemy and gives us hope and joy. It protects us from destroying our lives. It sanctifies us, and it saves us daily. This sounds like a weapon I could definitely use in my daily life. What about yours? -Sarah Bostic

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks the door will be opened.” —Matthew 7:7-8

Most athletes and coaches have a big crazy unbelievable dream or goal. Every locker room has banners and statements on the walls or above the doorways encouraging athletes to go for it. The words potential, possibility and opportunity swirl around in athletes’ minds during practices and competition. Opportunity, possibly and potential await – we give our full unwavering commitment to it, and we take our best shots to attain the goal. Every athlete can strive to get stronger, better and faster. It takes good effort and grit to stay. The requirement is the continuation of hard work and keeping our eyes on the goal. Endurance is needed to stay at it for as long as it takes.

There is something amazing about God, who is our Heavenly Father. He actually wants us to excel and get better at who we are and what we do. He created us and gave us abilities and skills. He puts in front of us opportunities, possibilities and potential. As a creative Heavenly Father, He desires that we advance and multiply the abilities and skills He gave to us. He created us in His own image and likeness, with the command to let our light (life) shine. His big desire is that we become more and more like Him in all we say and do.

When Jesus was speaking to a large crowd, He declared what our Heavenly Father is like when we come to Him and ask about things. In Matthew 7:7-11 He said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
