This Juneteenth, we’re reflecting on the role home plays in creating stability, connection, and opportunity. With homeownership rates showing consistent disparities, 34% for Black households, 54% for Hispanic or Latino households, and 76% for white households, we recognize there is no one-size-fits-all solution to advancing equitable homeownership.

As we mark Juneteenth and , we remain committed to sharing data and insights that support practical, community-centered solutions, helping create safe, stable places to call home, where people can exist without question and the ache for home is met.

It’s almost that time again! Although we’re only in June, we’re already planning our September HSA and can’t wait to see all of our Housing Stability Alliance (HSA) partners there.

Our HSA convenings bring partners together to discuss the policies and lived experiences impacting our Kent County neighbors. These conversations directly inform the solutions we’re building to dissolve homelessness and expand access to affordable homeownership and rental opportunities.

One of our partners, ICCF Community Homes, is making a big impact in Kent County! It’s incredible to see the new apartments in the Madison Square neighborhood breathing life into a community staple while also expanding housing opportunities for our neighbors.

The Tate & Thomas Apartments include 45 units across two buildings and are reserved for residents earning up to 80% of Kent County’s area median income, or about $59,760 annually for single-person households.

Michigan’s stated housing shortage is currently 100,000+ units. We know housing shortages are a widespread concern beyond the state level, and implementing tax credits to address this gap could help expand the supply of more affordable housing by financing the construction of new rental units priced below market rate.

If the tax credit works as intended, increased supply could ease rent pressures for residents over time. With requirements for below-market rents, the policy also potentially helps preserve a long-term pool of affordable housing.

Preventing evictions before they occur is the core goal of the Eviction Prevention Pilot developed in collaboration with our Housing Stability Alliance (HSA) team. In partnership with Heart of West Michigan United Way, the pilot prioritizes early intervention, intensive case management, and data-driven decision-making. Through this prevention framework, we are reducing displacement, preventing homelessness, and improving long-term community outcomes across Kent County.
