Hey Healthy Minds folks!
We wanted to follow up on Monday night’s presentation on masculinity and mental health. First, we wanted to thank those of you who showed up - from a brief head count, it looked like we had around 75 people in attendance, and we’re thrilled that so many of you were interested in the discussion!
We’ve also noticed that there has been some ongoing conversation around the presentation, and we’re aware that some people in attendance have disagreed with some of the things that speaker Rueben Lopez said. We want to let the Healthy Minds community know that we fully acknowledge these disagreements, and we as leaders have our own opinions of the presentation as well. However, we’re glad that there is continued conversation about the content of the presentation. Part of the mission of Healthy Minds is to foster discussion on all aspects of mental health by bringing in a variety of opinions on the subject. We may not all agree on how to address mental health, but that conversation is precisely why we exist as a group - we want to spark ongoing conversations about mental health on Calvin’s campus. By doing so, we hope that we can reach deep, meaningful conclusions about how to maintain good mental health and support one another.
This is a learning experience for everyone and we will continue to work harder towards securing capable and qualified speakers for future events. If you would like to share your perspective on the presentation over a cup of coffee or tea with us, we would love to hear from you. We want to be able to discuss things like this to continue learning how to create and foster a safe environment for these conversations.
Feel free to contact Aileen Rodarte ([email protected]) or Jason Entingh ([email protected]) and we’ll make sure to get in touch! Thanks everyone.
