Every individual should have the right to enjoy the fun of playing sports, the joy of teamwork, the achievement of hitting a ball, crossing the finish line or scoring a goal. Unfortunately, individuals with special needs are often left to look in from the outside. That's exactly why WMSHA was formed -- to get individuals with disabilities in the game. WMSHA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization t
hat was created in 2014 with a mission "to offer an amateur level ice hockey program for children and adults with any developmental disability." WMSHA is open to any player over the age of five, male or female, who is physically able to play but would be unable to participate in any other organized program due to a developmental or cognitive disability. WMSHA is a part of the American Special Hockey Association (ASHA) and is registered with USA Hockey. WMSHA is the only special hockey program in West Michigan and is one of only four programs in Michigan. The program is provided free of charge, with the exception of a small USA Hockey registration fee. All hockey equipment, skates, jerseys, ice time, and coaching are provided. WMSHA plays on Sunday afternoons at Patterson Ice Center in Grand Rapids. The season runs from October through March.
