One of the most useful lessons from our professional learning sessions at CCIJ came from data analyst and editor Peter Aldhous: do not drown your audience in a sea of statistics.

One mistake many reporters make when they begin working with data is trying to include too many numbers in a story. But more data does not always mean more clarity. In fact, it can make reporting harder for audiences to follow and less impactful

The goal is not to show every number you found. The goal is to use the numbers that matter most, the ones that help readers clearly understand the story and why it matters.

If you are working with data in your journalism, clarity should always come first.
