Samantha had been without housing for more than five years when she received an Upcycle bike at no-cost through our partners at Mel Trotter Ministries.

Speaking from stage at Pedals for Progress, she shared that “it was like unwrapping a Christmas gift—something I hadn’t gotten for a really long time.”

Samantha used her bike to start working for Door Dash making deliveries. She saved money to buy bike trailer so she could take her dog everywhere she went.

And most recently, Samantha rode her bike to sign a lease for an apartment.

Transportation is independence, employment access, and housing access. Congratulations, Samantha.

A bike helps a rider get where they need to go—but we want to make sure they get there safely.

That’s why every individual who receives a bike from us also receives safety essentials: lights, a lock, a helmet, and “What Every Michigan Bicyclist Must Know” guide.

Thanks to Workbox Staffing for sponsoring the backpacks that package the safety gear together for each rider. Together, we’re connecting community members to the reliable, safe, no-cost transportation they need.

Last month we provided our 4000th bike to its new rider, Antoinette!

Antoinette arrived in the U.S. this summer, and her bike is helping her get to work, run errands, and explore her new community. She recently rode on Kent Trails with her son, where they made new memories together in their new Michigan home.

Resettlement Program Supervisor Sarah—who connected Antoinette with Upcycle Bikes—said, “Thank you on behalf of the Samaritas New American services and all of our clients who have received bicycles from Upcycle. We love to see opportunities open up for people in real time when a transportation barrier is overcome.”

Thanks to all our guests, donors, volunteers, partners, and sponsors—including our Community Impact Sponsor BAI Foundation.

If you didn’t get a chance to make a gift at the event or you couldn’t join us, you can donate today to help provide affordable and accessible transportation in our community. Visit upcyclebikes.org/donate.
