It’s been a wonderful week of welcoming old friends back to the Art Colony.

David Feinberg returned for his weeklong studio mentorship session, Developing Your Artistic Potential, with a fantastic group of returning students. He also gave a deeply insightful and engaging talk, The Mystery of Unexpected Significance in Life and Art.

Carrie Schwert joined us for another artist residency, spending the week creating a world of fantastical fictional interiors.

And Amanda Hamilton, one of our 2024 Juried Artists in Residence, returned as an instructor to lead a lively workshop on making art while traveling.

We’re grateful for the creativity, curiosity, and connections that filled the campus this week.

The results are in and we're thrilled to announce that Sofia Vanderlan will be the inaugural Grand Portage National Monument Artist in Residence! We're so excited to host Sofia and so grateful to our partners, the Grand Portage National Monument and the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation.

From a strong pool of applicants, a juried panel selected Sofia for her powerful vision and deep connection to this place.

Sofia shared, “I hope to create a piece that braids the seven generations before us, the seven grandfather teachings, and the seven generations after us — a piece that represents the history of Grand Portage National Monument and what it represents to the community and Anishinaabe people.”
Congratulations, Sofia!

We've got a handful of upcoming summer workshops that still have a couple spots left. Registration is closing soon, so if you're looking to step away from the day-to-day for a bit and spend some time making, learning, and exploring, we've got something for everyone.

1. Love nature and observation? Maybe you've secretly wanted to be a botanical illustrator all your life? → Spirit of Plants: Nature Studies with Mary Esch & Laura Stack starting June 26th.

2. What about color and flow? Maybe you have deep interest in the viscosity and unexpected magic of fluid media? → Expressive Watercolor with Dan Mondloch starting July 22nd.

3. Maybe you're into experimentation and spontaneous expression? Maybe you see your world a little differently? → The Painted Interior: Abstraction and Observation with Tim Tozier starting July 16th.

4. Enjoy surprises and letting the process take the wheel? → Monotype through Drawing with Sarah Smelser starting July 15th.

5. Maybe ancient techniques and traditional crafts really do it for you? → Introduction to Japanese Woodblock Printmaking with Mary Brodbeck starting July 27th.

6. Or maybe, if you're like me, one thing isn't enough and you want it all, by experimenting, building up layers, and seeing what emerges in an out-of-the-box kind of way → Encaustic Painting with Jodi Reeb starting July 27th.

We did it!!
We now have a little inn of our own and a great place for artists and students to call home while they're in Grand Marais.

We could not have done this without the support of our members and all of the creativity-loving individuals that donated over $220,000 to our cause over the last few months. We're still about $17,000 short of our goal, those funds will help us with some renovation projects that we'll be starting later this summer. So if you've been on the fence or are in a giving kind of mood today - consider helping us shore up the rest of our fundraising goal.

And for the full experience, come take a class or do a residency with us. You and all the new friends you'll make will have a comfortable and affordable place to lay your heads.

In August, we'll feature Duluth oil painter, James Ellis alongside Carlton, MN photographer, Mary Stafford.

September will highlight Duluth mixed media artist, Sue Rauschenfels & Grand Marais weaver, Emily Wick.

Join us for opening receptions with the artists at the beginning of each month. We can't wait to celebrate these incredible MN artists!

Hey! This is Laura Brown, our inaugural Grand Marais Arts Festival Printmaker Artist-in-Residence.

No stranger to Grand Marais, Laura was part of North House's ADP program a few years back, and is returning this summer to help everyone make some sick seagull prints in Harbor Park.

Come out to Arts Fest on July 11-12 to see the Grand Marais Seagull Colony in action - And maybe even walk away with some new skills, artwork, and experiences that you didn't have before and soon won't be able to live without.

Today, we are deeply grateful to the Blandin Foundation of Grand Rapids, MN.

With support from the Blandin Foundation and our many generous community donors, we’re working to create affordable lodging for artists and instructors visiting the North Shore. This project is about ensuring that creativity remains accessible in Grand Marais, now and for years to come.

Without affordable places to stay, many artists simply cannot afford to teach, learn, or participate in the creative life of this community.

We are getting closer, but we are not there yet.

As we prepare to purchase the inn, we’re asking our community to help make this vision permanent. Every donation helps secure a future where artists can continue to gather, create, and contribute to the cultural life that makes Grand Marais unique.

Grand Marais is changing quickly, and spaces that support artists, teachers, and creative exchange are becoming harder to afford and harder to keep. Now is the moment to invest in the future of the arts on the North Shore.
