Join us tomorrow night as John Hitchcock visits Studio 21 and discusses his exhibition, What Is America? Land Fragments. It's the final weekend that this will be on display, so don't miss this great opportunity to dive deeper into the practice of this well-established artist.

Friday, Oct. 16
4:30 - 5:30 pm at Studio 21 in Grand Marais

Land Fragments talks about the complex relationship among the Indigenous body, colonial policies, and the physical land around us. The exhibition will feature abstract representations, visual language, and vibrant colors that reference Hitchcock’s kaku’s (Comanche grandmother’s) beadwork and growing up in the Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma on Comanche Tribal lands next to the U.S. field artillery military base, Fort Sill. Many of the images are interpretations of stories shared by his Kiowa and Comanche grandparents, as well as abstract visuals influenced by beadwork and intercultural identities. Embracing contemporary materials and creative practices while honoring his ancestors, he creates a celebratory aesthetic of cultural hybridity and strength.

Fall Break Weekend is for the creative learner in us all. Join us for David Hahn Art Days this Thursday and Friday for free art activities that are a blast for the whole family.

David Hahn was a beloved community-member, artist who passed away in 2022. He attended Washington University School of Fine Arts and the University of Minnesota. David was Art Director for Miller Publishing. After retiring to Hovland, David focused on watercolor and enjoyed teaching youth classes at the Art Colony as well as working within the public school, creating portrait cards for the Viking athletic teams. His generous memorial gifts support the funding for this event.

Exploring Monoprints
Heinrich Toh

Participants will explore a variety of materials to make one-of-a-kind prints, including plant materials, cardboard, doilies, and bubble wrap. Mark and pattern-making tools will also be used, along with craft foam relief shapes. Working with a variety of materials to create a print is an intuitive process with endless possibilities that is easy for young ones and beginners. While the more skilled can be challenged with creating more complex prints with multiple layers.

Textured Creatures
Hana Nichols

Explore organic textures in the process of relief printing. Participants will use Play-Doh and organic materials such as leaves, pinecones, sticks, grass, and rocks to create an organic texture. Elements will be put together to create unique prints.

We’ll also have clay activities, suminagashi, and painting pumpkins for all attendees.

TRY IT! Word Prompt Illustrations
with Allison Healy
Thursday, Dec. 3rd

An immersive, mixed-media workshop designed to bridge the gap between written thought and visual expression through intuitive art journaling. Students will learn to bypass creative blocks by using specific word prompts as the catalyst for vibrant, layered compositions. You will explore a “collage-first” approach, integrating paper scraps, old book pages, and bold hand-lettering with watercolor washes and fine-liner detailing to create deeply personal illustrations. Perfect for artists of all levels, this course focuses on the tactile joy of playing with textures and symbols, transforming a blank page into a narrative landscape where text and art coexist.

After two years as a beloved long-term clay studio resident at the Art Colony, it’s time to send off the rootin’ tootin’est ceramic artist the Art Colony has ever had!

During her time here, Aleka Tomlinson .nap has shared so much more than her own creative practice. She’s been a gracious and welcoming force in the clay studio, generously sharing her expert knowledge of kiln repair and improving studio processes, all while keeping the studio chuggin’ along and helping fellow artists understand what makes it all work.

And she’s brought that same generosity to the classroom, teaching a wide variety of youth and adult clay classes and inspiring new makers, curious beginners, and seasoned students alike to get their hands dirty and have some fun.

Aleka, thank you for the knowledge, laughter, creativity, and community you’ve brought to the Art Colony. We’ll miss having you in the studios, but we’re so grateful for the mark you’ve left here.

Life Drawing
Tuesdays, Dec. 1st - March 30th

Life drawing is the practice of sketching real people right in front of you. It’s a skill that improves how you observe and draw the human figure. Models will rotate between n**e, clothed and the sessions will also incorporate drawing from the skeletal structure. Sessions will start with short, warm-up poses and quick gestural sketches before ending with a long pose that participants can work from. This is an untutored session, which means there won’t be teaching instruction.

TRY IT! Value Scales

November 19th

The first in our TRY IT! series. These casual & beginner-friendly workshops are free to all current Art Colony Members

Learn to master visual depth using only pencil, black ink, and white space. This course moves beyond basic shading, challenging students to create complex value scales through the meticulous application of line, texture, and pattern. Allison will guide you through the process of creating form, movement, and mood.

Introduction to Monoprints
with Heinrich Toh
Oct. 9th - 10th

**LAST CHANCE TO ENROLL**

Learn the absolute basics to printmaking in this beginner workshop. Explore basic printmaking applications on paper with layered monotypes, while learning to work with color, composition and printing on an etching press. It is an easy, fun, intuitive process with many possibilities.

We will combine painterly brushstrokes, use natural elements like dried flowers and leaves; along with other found materials to create impressions, marks, pattern and embossments. Get inspired and create your own one of a kind work!

Art Along the Lake is in full swing this week! There are so many great stops to make along the shore, and Studio 21 is an official gallery stop with so much to see.

Lucy Carlson is our featured artist at the gallery. Lucy joined our Ceramics Cohort Residency program earlier this year and has been busy creating new work this fall. Stop in to see the wonderful new clay pieces she has on display.

We also still have our September Arrowhead Rising Exhibition on view, featuring Sue Rauschenfels and Emily Wick. Their respective works in mixed-media painting and fiber play so well together and really light up the gallery. This exhibit will be on display through the end of Art Along the Lake.

We're open every day during AAtL from 10 AM–5 PM. Come on by!

Beginning Acrylic
with Adam Swanson
November 20 - 21

Start from the foundation as Adam demonstrates each step of the process of making an acrylic painting, from gessoing a board/canvas, to creating a drawing and painting, to varnishing and wiring the finished piece. Students will receive individualized instruction that supports all skill levels, including painters with more experience. Adam will demonstrate color mixing using a variety of color theory techniques as well as glazing and impasto techniques with a palette knife, brush, and scraping tools. Students will create a series of paintings using their own reference material and learn to keep proportions accurate.
