Today is 36 years since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law.

The ADA protects the rights of people with disabilities in jobs, schools, public places, and more. But it didn’t happen overnight. It took years of advocacy, protests, and community action.

In 1977, disabled activists held the 504 Sit-ins to demand the government enforce a law that banned disability discrimination in programs with federal funding. The San Francisco protest lasted 28 days and became the longest takeover of a federal building in U.S. history.

This movement built the path to the ADA. Disabled people marched, spoke out, and demanded change.

We celebrate the progress made and honor those who made it possible. The work isn’t over.
