Hot weather = extra responsibility for our trail pups 🐶☀️🥾
As temperatures across western Colorado climb back into the 90s, it’s a great time to refresh on some important Leave No Trace practices when hiking with dogs in our National Conservation Areas:
💧 Bring MORE water than you think you’ll need — for both you AND your dog
🌡 Avoid hiking during the hottest part of the day
🐾 Check trail surfaces with your hand—rock and sand can burn sensitive paws quickly
🦮 Keep dogs under control and respect wildlife, other hikers, and sensitive habitat. If your dog is farther away than you can see/recall them, they are too far away!
💩 Pack out dog waste ALWAYS (yes, really!) and never leave baggies trailside “to grab later” so you can't forget them
🚫 Remember that biological soil crust and desert vegetation are fragile—keep pets on durable surfaces and established trails
Our dogs love these landscapes just as much as we do, and a little extra preparation goes a long way toward keeping both pets and public lands safe this summer 💚
