Most days, you’ll find them in turnout gear serving the citizens of Grand Junction.

But in these moments, a couple of our Local 2808 firefighters are wearing a different uniform alongside the Grand Junction Police Department SWAT Team as Tactical Emergency Medical Services (TEMS) providers.

Training and operating alongside SWAT helps ensure advanced medical care is ready when seconds matter most during high-risk incidents.

No matter the uniform, the mission stays the same: protect lives, support the team, and serve the community.

Proud of our brothers representing and Local 2808 in this specialized role.

Today, on Memorial Day, the firefighters of Grand Junction Local 2808 pause to honor the military personnel who gave their lives in service to our country.

For years, generations of American service members have answered the call to defend this nation and protect the freedoms we often take for granted. Their sacrifice has shaped the story of the United States through war, hardship, and moments that demanded courage beyond measure.

As firefighters, we understand the weight of service, sacrifice, and duty to others. In all we do, we strive to live lives that honor those fallen heroes while continuing to serve and protect the people of Grand Junction.

May we never forget the cost of freedom, or the men and women who paid the ultimate price for it. 🇺🇸

Leadership means keeping your priorities in order.

At our latest membership meeting, President Rasmussen addressed the membership in person after submitting his resignation as President of Local 2808 to prioritize what he often calls his three Fs: faith, family, and fire. In that order. We are grateful for his leadership, dedication, and service to this Local.

Following a vote by the Executive Board, Derek Gruendler will serve as the new President of Local 2808, while Rasmussen will continue serving the membership as Vice President for the remainder of the term.

Thank you, President Rasmussen, for everything you’ve given this Local. Your hard work, dedication, and countless hours of time and effort in this role did not go unnoticed.

Every year in May, the fire service gathers in silence before the tones, the sirens, and the speeches begin. Boots line the pavement. Apparatus roll slowly through Lakewood. Families hold onto folded programs a little tighter. And etched into Colorado rose granite are the names of 174 firefighters who gave everything in the line of duty. And among those names, Grand Junction remembers our own, Captain John F. Bennett of the Grand Junction Fire Department. Captain Bennett passed away June 19, 1973, after suffering a heart attack on duty.

This year, two more names were added to that wall.
Kristin Hayes of Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District.
Patrick Rogacki of Colorado Springs Fire Department.

The Colorado Fallen Firefighters Memorial doesn’t just honor how they died. It honors how they lived, answering calls, protecting strangers, serving their communities, and standing beside their crews no matter the cost.

The memorial itself tells the story of the fire service: one firefighter caring for a fallen brother or sister while others continue the fight. Because even through grief, the mission continues.

Today, members of Grand Junction Firefighters Local 2808 had the honor of sponsoring and participating in the 1st Annual Mia Strong Golf Classic at Bookcliff Country Club.

Hosted by Holy Family Catholic School, the tournament raised funds to improve playground accessibility and provide adaptive equipment so Mia can safely participate in something every kid deserves to experience: daily recess with her friends.

It was more than a golf tournament. It was a community coming together to make sure no child is left on the sidelines. We’re proud to support efforts that make a lasting difference for local families.

Some names on the wall are from decades ago.
Some losses are still fresh.
But every name represents a firefighter who answered the call to protect others and never made it home.

The Colorado Fallen Firefighters Foundation was established in 1989 to support the families of firefighters killed in the line of duty and to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten.

The Colorado Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Lakewood honors every firefighter lost in the line of duty across our state; career or volunteer, union or non-union, structural or wildland. The foundation also recognizes federal firefighters who were killed while assigned to fires in Colorado, even if they called another state home.

The memorial stands as a permanent reminder that behind every badge is a family, a crew, and a community that carries that loss forever.

Behind every shift, late-night call, missed holiday, and early morning tone-out is a mom making sacrifices for her family and her crew. Some wear the uniform. Some wait for the uniform to come home. All of them carry more than most people will ever see.

Some spend their shifts caring for strangers like family on someone’s worst day, sacrificing time with their own families to protect someone else’s.
Others spend 48+ hours holding everything together at home; running the kids around, managing schedules, keeping the house going, and waiting for their firefighter to walk back through the door, never quite knowing what version of the job is coming home with them.

Today we recognize the strength, patience, sacrifice, and heart that keeps this fire family going.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the firehouse moms. You are loved and seen. ❤️🚒

Why do firefighters train so much?

Because the fireground doesn’t care if you’re tired.
The call still comes.

We train in the heat.
We train in full gear.
We train until the basics become muscle memory, because when someone is having the worst day of their life, hesitation isn’t an option.

We train for the low-frequency, high-risk calls, because when they happen, lives are on the line and training is all we have to lean on.

What looks routine to the public is backed by hours of reps, sweat, and preparation behind the scenes.

Training isn’t punishment.
It’s pride in the job.
It’s trust in the crew beside you.
And it’s commitment to the community we serve every day.

The ones beside you…Are also behind you. Brotherhood knows no boundaries, it’s not station deep, it’s service wide.
