Service dogs are more than companions—they are highly trained working partners who help provide safety, independence, and confidence to their handlers every day.

One of the most important things you can do when you see a service dog is to let them work. Avoid petting, talking to, or distracting them, as even a momentary distraction can interfere with an important task.

🐾 Respect the dog.
🐾 Respect the handler.
🐾 Respect the work.

Today is ❤️ ...yes we love our feline friends too around here!

With that being said, we had to share another adorable face we got to see yesterday at Roice-Hurst Humane Society. The precious face behind the pink towel maybe not one you can hug however would make a wonderful barn cat!

☕ Wellness Wednesday – Did You Know? ☕

Did you know there’s a local Veteran Coffee Club right here in Grand Junction?

Veterans can gather every Wednesday morning for coffee, conversation, camaraderie, and support in a welcoming environment with others who understand the military journey. Sometimes the best wellness starts with simply connecting with others.

➡️➡️➡️ Our pups are getting a major uniform upgrade! 🐾🇺🇸

There are a lot of “fake” service dogs out there. We know because we see it too.

To better protect our dogs and clearly identify which pups are officially part of Collar of Duty, we are introducing new service dog vests for dogs currently enrolled in our program and actively receiving COD training.

A challenge COD has faced is our current vests match a popular style that anyone can buy online, and honestly, our veterans and their pups deserve more than an “everyday” vest.

We are so grateful to be working with Ruffwear to get official service dog vests featuring the Collar of Duty logo.

If you know a business that would like to sponsor a vest for a veteran and their pup, the cost is $35 per vest. Donations to Collar of Duty are tax-deductible, and we would love to publicly thank each company that helps support this upgrade.

🐾 Sponsor a vest. Support a veteran. Protect a working dog.

Meet Scout!

Scout was recently assessed to be a possible service dog but didn't make the cut. Why? He is way too playful and full of energy, but is mastering to sit on command. If you an outdoor person who can handle a high energy dog...this might be your new companion/best friend. We have shared a link about Scout below.

He is currently at Roice-Hurst Humane Society if you have any further questions.

From Our President:

One thing I have always believed in is running a transparent nonprofit.
At the end of the day, Collar of Duty is not funded by endless resources. We are funded by grants, donations, sponsorships, and the incredible support of people who believe in our mission. We are spending other people’s hard-earned money, and I believe our community deserves honesty about where Collar of Duty currently stands.

Three years ago, Collar of Duty was built on hope, healing, and a need within our community. Since the beginning, we have worked hard to prepare for emergencies and difficult moments. Unfortunately, we are now approaching the point where we may need to begin using those emergency funds just to continue operating.
We understand economic hardship has affected many families across the country. Rising costs, including gas prices and daily living expenses, have impacted everyone — including many of our supporters. While our mission focuses on supporting local Mesa County veterans, we are blessed to have supporters from across the nation who continue standing behind us.
At this time, Collar of Duty is facing the possible closure of new applications through the end of 2026 unless additional funding and volunteer support can be secured.

If you already have an application submitted, this does NOT affect you. We are continuing to work with current applicants and veterans already in the program. However, we may soon have to begin a waiting list for future applicants.
This is one of the hardest messages we have had to share.

We need help.

We need donations to help fund training, supplies, and program costs.
We need dedicated volunteer board members willing to step forward.

We need people willing to share our mission, advocate for us, and stand beside us during this critical moment.

This organization has always been powered by people who care deeply about veterans, rescue dogs, and the belief that no one should fight alone.

Right now, we are asking our community to help us continue that mission.

If you have ever considered donating, volunteering, sponsoring, fundraising, or becoming involved in any way — now is the time.
If you have questions about the status of Collar of Duty or anything mentioned above, please visit our website or reach out directly.

We also encourage anyone interested in nonprofit transparency to visit Candid.org, where you can view organizational and financial information about Collar of Duty. We strongly believe people deserve to know where their donations are going and how their support impacts our mission.

Thank you for continuing to believe in us, our veterans, and our dogs.
