We’ll still be here too, but we’re working to build spaces for deeper conversations, community storytelling, and more sustainable ways to connect.

Come give a S.H.I.T. (Sustainable, Healthy, Innovative Toilet) with us in more corners of the internet.

We know toilet conversations are not exactly most people’s favorite dinner topic.

And yet here you are.

Reading.
Learning.
Sharing.
Caring about public health, dignity, sanitation, and community wellbeing in a world that often prefers not to think about those things at all.

That willingness matters more than you probably realize.

Thanks for being people who are willing to stay curious, compassionate, and engaged, even around topics that are uncomfortable sometimes.

Food insecurity is often talked about, and it should be.

But toilet insecurity affects people every single day too.

When there’s nowhere safe to go, people are forced into alleyways, parks, waterways, or dangerous situations that most of us never have to think about.

Toilet access isn’t a luxury.
It’s dignity. It’s health. It’s safety.

World Environment Day often focuses on forests, oceans, and wildlife. Those matter deeply, but environmental stewardship also includes the systems we build for human waste, sanitation, and public health.

Every day, Toilet Equity works at the intersection of:
🌎 environmental responsibility
đźš˝ human dignity
đź’© composting and waste diversion
🤝 community care

Because sustainable communities require sustainable sanitation too.

This line from our recent conversation with emergency physician and Toilet Equity board member Bill Hilty has stayed with us.

The conversation explored uncertainty, nonprofit leadership, emergency medicine, and what it means to keep moving forward even when the solution isn’t fully visible yet.

Sometimes progress begins with simply being willing to start.

The “messy middle” is the part people rarely post about.

It’s the uncertain season where progress feels slow, outcomes aren’t guaranteed, and you’re still figuring things out as you go.

But honestly? That’s where most meaningful work actually happens.

What can emergency medicine teach us about nonprofit leadership, uncertainty, and compost?

Quite a lot, actually.

In this month’s conversation, emergency physician and longtime Toilet Equity board member Bill Hilty reflects on what it means to lead through “the messy middle” — those moments when the path forward isn’t clear, but standing still isn’t an option either.

Together, we talk about:
• how teams function during chaos,
• why strong leaders stay calm before they act,
• how organizations avoid mission drift,
• and why meaningful community change often requires patience, trust, and iteration.

From CPR calls to compost piles, this conversation is thoughtful, honest, unexpectedly funny at times, and deeply human.

“One of the hardest things in uncertainty is deciding whether to act or not act.”
