Now that we’ve discussed the what… what are ideas for the how?

I would love to start with the governor because that is who has the control, but that is not going to happen.

I feel like a monthly meeting with a community cafe style structure, which I am trained in, would be a great start.

Those people who aren’t local to Grand Island could zoom. Who would be interested in attending and advertising to people they know who are passionate about this cause?

Here is where things typically die down because it is a commitment and we are all busy. I’m praying that I get responses.

What are the top three changes that you think would make the biggest difference in our foster care system?

My thoughts are:
1. Funding (Pay For Workers Would Bring Quality Workers)
2. Training (Attorneys, Intake Personnel, Law Enforcement and DHHS Workers, Judges, etc.)
3. Mental Health Needs Being Addressed (Once We Take Them In Quality Specialized Counseling Should Be Provided Without Limitations On Who We Can Choose From)

I would love to hear your thoughts. I also hate that a child can be placed for over 2 years and then taken out of a foster home. It’s so hard!

Escape from a House of Horror on ABC tonight was a great example of our system right now. It is so incredibly underfunded with low expectations. Having a Master’s degree in Social Work or Counseling should be mandatory. Attorneys ad litem should be trained in a very different way than the average attorney. Judges need to have specialized training. The officers that interview children need specialized training. I’m just so incredibly tired of being a mandated reporter, but typically all that results in is a child being returned to the home with even worse consequences and coaching on not talking or advocating for themselves. I’ve asked for a meeting with Governor Pillen and have not been granted that right. Prayers! If anyone else has any ideas… please share!
