WBMAF: How we began and where we are headed...

In 2018, a group of current and retired teachers, artists, and community members came together to create the Westra Bye Memorial Art Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, in memory of Robin Bye and Donna Westra, two former art teachers who were beloved by their students. Robin Bye, a long time Elementary and Middle School Art teacher, joined the Grand Haven High School staff as the Athletic Director not long before he sadly passed away. Donna Westra, formerly a high school art teacher and art club director, followed him less than a year later. The WBMAF’s purpose is to support visual arts education for Grand Haven Area Public School students in honor of these two devoted teachers.

Our mission is to provide an annual visual arts college scholarship, and to support k-12 students who are experiencing financial need by providing funds for art related expenses ranging from framing work for art competitions, preparing portfolios for college admissions and scholarship reviews, and for art materials fees for elective classes at Grand Haven High School. Additionally, we hope to expand our vision to include support for specialty art education programs such as visiting artists and summer programs.

WBMAF is already making strides toward our mission...Due to community support, in their first six months, WBMAF awarded an art supply stipend to a graduating senior who is pursuing a college visual arts degree, and subsidized art supply fees for elective visual art classes at GHHS for students in financial need.
