✨ Senior Spotlight: Madelyn Ruthig ✨
At just 17 years old, Madelyn Ruthig is already leaving an incredible mark on the skating community. A senior at Red River High School, Madelyn is the daughter of Mike and Joelle Ruthig and has dedicated the past 10 years to competitive figure skating with the Border Blades Figure Skating Club. From individual skating to synchronized skating, her journey has been filled with growth, grit, and unforgettable memories.
Madelyn skated with every synchro team in the program, spending the last six seasons with the Emerald Blades. Along the way, she and her teammates traveled near and far—making memories at competitions in Bismarck, Maplewood, Beaver Dam, Rockford, Wichita, Kalamazoo, Chicago, and Plymouth 🧳❄️. Those experiences, friendships, and shared goals are some of her most cherished moments.
A dedicated and driven athlete, Madelyn is a gold medalist in skating skills and is working toward completing her gold dances (both partnered and solo) by the end of summer 🥇. She recently hit a huge milestone by achieving her highest personal record and passing her Novice Singles Freeskate test at the 2026 Red River Valley Classic. Her favorite moment this season? Looking up into the stands during her Holiday Classic skate and seeing familiar, smiling faces as she delivered her personal best performance 💫.
Beyond competing, Madelyn loves giving back. For four years, she’s coached with the Park District’s Learn to Skate program and served as a junior coach for the Opal Blades synchro team 👧⛸️. This fall, she’ll attend University of North Dakota, pursue a Nursing degree, continue coaching, and hopes to skate with the UND Hockey Cheer 💚.
Her message to younger skaters: believe in yourself, embrace the falls, trust the process, and never stop practicing—because anything is possible with hard work and heart 👏👏.
