Wow! What a great turnout for our stargazing event last night at the top of Berthoud Pass with the Continental Divide Trail Coalition and Grand County Astronomers. The clouds opened up enough for folks to see Jupiter and 3 of its moons, Venus in its oval shape because part of its dark side facing us and the twin stars of Gemini. If you stayed long enough you may have heard a bit about celestial navigation and how to use your fist and pinky to roughly determine how many degrees North you are. We had so much fun we're going to look into making this an annual event. 🌠

Shout out to Eric and Lara from Local Experience for serving up the hot cocoa. ☕️ They are master parking lot chefs and carry a lot of the gear that can help you out in that endeavor.

This week was all about chainsaw skills. HTA now has 6 newly minted sawyers to add to our team. Congrats to this bunch who gained their S212 chainsaw certifications! We're looking forward to them being BA trail fairies. 😉 Thanks to Ricardo with East Grand Fire Protection District for schoolin' them up!

Join us for our Adopt-A-Trail (AAT) workshop and learn how to become a volunteer with HTA! Workshop will include practice in the field in the morning followed by classroom training for the afternoon. Learn about our AAT program and how you can get involved! 🪚🔨🪏

Participants will learn skills necessary to perform trail maintenance tasks independently and in groups. We will cover techniques such as corridor clearing, drainage construction, fallen timber clearing, tool safety, risk management, and how to report trail accomplishments and trail issues. Training will also include a tutorial of the trail app, COTREX.

Lunch and training materials included.

Please join us in welcoming Troy Sitton to the Headwaters Trails Alliance team!

Troy brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from his time with Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s State OHV Crew and the Trails Preservation Alliance. As an avid recreator and highly skilled machine operator, Troy has dedicated countless hours to improving and protecting trail systems across Colorado.

Troy has joined HTA’s Fire Recovery Crew, where he will be working primarily in the burn scars of the East Troublesome and Williams Fork Fires, helping restore access, improve safety, and support the long-term recovery of these landscapes and trail networks.

We are thrilled to have Troy’s expertise, passion, and leadership on our crew. His experience will be invaluable as we continue the important work of restoring trails and rebuilding recreation opportunities in Grand County and beyond.

Welcome to the team, Troy!
