CLSC had our last meeting of the year on April 29 at the Graham Country Club. Hostesses were the new officers. Table decorations were beautiful spring flowers. Our program was presented by Josh Espinoza, the Young County game warden. He filled us in on the many and varied duties of a Texas game warden then answered questions. Thank you to program chairman Janet Sims for the wonderful programs this year. And many thanks to Debi Burkett for serving faithfully as President.

CLSC had our program on Wednesday, April 22nd at the Graham Country Club. Our program chairman was Betsy Casteel, while our hostesses were Terry McMillan and Julie Burkett.

Our guest speaker was Tony Widner, who works with the Young County Museum of History in Graham,Texas. He has had a long career in law-enforcement in Graham, first as a Police Officer for 38 years and then as Chief of Police for ten years, before retiring.

He shared a story of his first car chase as a young and inexperienced 18 year-old officer. The person he was chasing was only 17 and apparently took him on a wild trip through Graham. He did apprehend him, and the ironic thing was… Tony could carry a gun, but was too young to buy ammunition, so his father had to buy it for him.

Tony is a great storyteller and had an assortment of stories from Graham’s “Wild West” days. One he mentioned, was about the Marlow Brothers who broke out of jail in Graham in 1888 after being involved in a horse theft. A book was written about them named, The Sons of Katie Elder. Later, a movie was made in 1965 starring John Wayne and Dean Martin as two of the four brothers return to Texas for their mother‘s funeral, only to uncover a conspiracy involving their father‘s death and loss of the family ranch.

The Santa Claus Bank robbery in Cisco, Texas in 1927 was one of Texas, most infamous crimes, and led to the largest manhunt ever seen in the state. Eventually, the th*****me was ambushed by Sheriff Foster of Young County at South Bend as they tried to cross the Brazos river.

It was a very informative lecture, with many stories some of us may not have heard before.

The last picture is of our new officers for CLSC for the next two years starting in September.

On March 25th we took our annual field trip. This year we went to Albany and it was certainly a wonderful community with lots of surprises!

You can experience the legacy of the frontier at the many historic sites. They have a thriving vibrant downtown with shops, dining and friendly people. Their heritage is on display everywhere from the restored courthouse, to their world-class Old Jail Art Center, or the Fort Griffin Fandangle, the states oldest outdoor musical.

We started our day on the square looking at memorials of former residents who had a place in Albany’s heritage. After lunch at the Ice House, we found several shops we enjoyed. To our surprise they also had an ice cream counter at the pharmacy. There is lots to do and see there, as it is very rich in history as well as a community that is very welcoming. It was a fun and enjoyable day packed with a few surprises! Many of us are looking forward to going back…

On March 11th, CLSC met at the Graham Country Club. Our program chairman was Deborah Stamper and our hostess was Judy Lofton.
Our speaker was Matt Hughs, co-owner of the Middleton Hotel in Graham.

It was a very interesting and informative program on the history of the Middleton. The building was built in 1896 or 1898 and had been vacant for 15 years before they began to renovate it.

It now has 16 rooms and one part-time employee. It also has a kitchen and bar area to serve customers. The interior is beautifully done with dark wood and comfortable seating.

At this time, he is also working on a building in Weatherford, Texas which was built about 1883. It will have hotel rooms much like The Middleton in Graham. He is also building several spaces for other businesses to open close to the hotel.

On March 25th we will have our annual field trip.

CLSC met February 25th at the Graham Country Club. Our program chairman was Jo Ann Crum and hostess was Anne Heartfield.

Our program was presented by Dennis and Andy Heath who were instrumental in creating The Hero House, an intellectual and developmental disabilities day service for Graham and surrounding area adults.

Since January 2024 Dennis and Andy, along with the Friends of The Arc Board have diligently worked to raise funds to establish a facility for The Arc of Wichita County. They found a location at 612 South Street and immediately began to renovate the new building.

They started with six IDD student’s and now have 27. Fees for this service may vary, but money that they can generate improves the service to keep individuals. So, with that being said donations are always appreciated!

On January 14, 2026 CLSC held their first meeting of the year at Graham Country Club. Our program chairman was Jo Ann Koberg and our hostess was Joe Beth Gibson. The Graham High School art class provided beautiful watercolor scenes for the tables.

Our guest speaker was De Anna Bullock, Director of the Library in Graham. Weta Phillips, presented her with a check for $5000 for the library from the CLSC Tour of Homes held in December.

She gave us several examples of the services and programs provided by the library for the community. Just a few of these are family night,
Easter egg hunts, summer reading, a men’s book club, and books on wheels. There are many more programs provided weekly, monthly and annually. De Anna mentioned to be sure and visit the library as there are over 50,000 books there, so something for everyone.
