We are so sad to say Mavis Dodge an active member of our Society passed away recently. She will be missed by us and all who were a part of her life. She was active in restoring the E Grafton Christian Union Church which the town owns now and the Historical Society is renovating, She referred to it as "her church" attending all of the activities that were held in the church as our venue and donating Christmas wreaths for the outside of the door. Sundays when the Museum was open she also took part in taking responsibility of overseeing the museum for the day.
May she rest in peace.

Lecture and Demonstration by Steve Gasiorowski of the 12th NH Volunteer Regiment Serenade Band this Saturday at 2pm!

This presentation will include a brief overview of the development of brass instruments that led to the founding of many town bands in the 1840s-50s. A large number of these bands enlisted in state volunteer regiments that served during the Civil War. Specific information on NH bands and musicians will illustrate the involvement of the bands throughout the war and the resulting "Golden Age of Bands" post-war. Several historic horns will be displayed and a few tunes played for the crowd's entertainment.

Contra Dancing in New Hampshire: a NH Humanities program offered by the Friends of the Grafton Library. This Saturday at the town hall, 1pm!

Since the late 1600s, the lively tradition of contra dancing has kept people of all ages swinging and sashaying in barns, town halls, and schools around the state. Contra dancing came to New Hampshire by way of the English colonists and remains popular in many communities, particularly in the Monadnock Region. Presenter Dudley Laufman brings this tradition to life with stories, poems and recordings of callers, musicians, and dancers, past and present. Live music, always integral to this dance form, will be played on the fiddle and melodeon.
