On Sunday, May 31st, at 4:45 am, the moon will be full. It is a Blue Moon, so named because it is the second full moon in one calendar month. It is also a micromoon, since it is near apogee and its distance from Earth will make it seem slightly smaller and dimmer. To be honest, the difference is so slight it is hardly noticeable.

There will be a meeting of the Central Appalachian Astronomy Club this Saturday, May 30th at 6:30 p.m., at the Good Hope Observatory in Jane Lew, WV.

If you haven't paid your 2026 dues yet, please do so at the meeting or mail directly to Jeri Booher, Treasurer, at 324 Bartlett Avenue, Bridgeport, WV 26330. This is the last meeting to pay club dues and retain your membership in the CAAC, as we need to pay CAAC membership to the Astronomical League in June. If you have not paid your dues by that time, your name will be removed from CAAC roles.

We will be enjoying our usual potluck supper, so please bring something for the table to share.

Mayday, May 1st was known in Celtic times as Beltane. Beltane is a traditional Gaelic festival marking the start of summer and peak spring fertility. Celebrated with bonfires, Maypoles, and dancing, it honors growth, fire, and union, historically protecting cattle and people. It is a time for celebrating fertility, passion, and renewal, with traditions often involving building bonfires, crafting garlands, and honoring the union of the Goddess and God. Beltane is one of 4 Cross Quarter Days, marking the midpoints between the equinox and the solstice.
